Subject: [archives] Position opening: Assistant Archivist and
Librarian at the Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA

Assistant Archivist and Librarian

The Barnes Foundation seeks applications for the position of Assistant
Archivist and Librarian. The Barnes Foundation, an educational
institution dedicated to the appreciation of fine arts and
horticulture, houses one of the finest gatherings of French
Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern paintings in the
world, as well as important examples of American paintings; African
sculpture; Native American ceramics, jewelry, and textiles; medieval
manuscripts and sculptures; Old Master paintings; ancient art; and
American and European decorative arts and metalwork. The Foundation's
12-acre arboretum contains a large living collection including a rose
garden, perennial garden, and woodland, and supports the programs of
the Arboretum School.

The Barnes Foundation Archives and Library provides research and
reference services to staff, students, faculty, docents, and outside
researchers. The department also cares for, preserves, and catalogues

approximately 2,500 linear feet of archival materials, two small
circulating libraries, and a collection of rare books, journals, and
auction and exhibition catalogues.

Responsibilities: The Assistant Archivist and Librarian reports to the

Archivist and Librarian and assists with all aspects of managing the
Foundation's archives and circulating libraries.

This position is responsible for processing archival materials according
to current standards, including re-housing, arranging, labeling,

assessing condition, and the creation of DACS-compliant EAD finding aids
and MARC records. Library cataloguing duties include processing and
cataloguing incoming library books and serials for the circulating
collections, and cataloguing non-circulating published materials

(primarily early 20th century), including books, auctions catalogues,
and exhibition catalogues.

The Assistant Archivist and Librarian provides a variety of reference
services, including researching and answering reference questions for

in-house staff in all departments; providing reference assistance via
telephone, email, and in person for external researchers; and assisting
patrons in using the circulating library collections.

In preparation for the opening of a new library in the Foundation's new

facility in downtown Philadelphia, the Assistant Archivist and Librarian
will take part in the expansion, re-classification, and move of the art
library collection. This position will also participate in planning for

an archival exhibition program in the new building, as well as
digitization projects.

The Assistant Archivist and Librarian also contributes to the
development of policies and procedures for the Archives and Library

Department, and supervises archives and library interns and volunteers
as needed. After the opening of the new library downtown, hours at that
location will be required.

Qualifications:

Required:

* ALA-accredited MLS degree with specialization in archives
administration or ACA certification, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience.

* Knowledge of current archival arrangement and description standards

* Knowledge of MARC cataloguing for books and archival materials.

* Experience with encoding finding aids into EAD.
