Drexel Exceeds Fundraising Goal for Spectrum Scholars Program

PHILADELPHIA (June 25, 2010) - On June 10, 2010, more than two dozen iSchool at Drexel students, faculty, alumni and members of the Philadelphia community dined under the stars for a cause - to raise funds for the American Library Association's Spectrum Scholarship Program. A special barbecue was co-hosted by The iSchool at Drexel and Drexel University Libraries in the iSchool's Alumni Garden. The event, which was expected to raise $1,000 for the Spectrum Scholarship Program generated $1,699 in contributions.

"The iSchool at Drexel, in collaboration with the Drexel Libraries, was pleased to support the Spectrum Scholarship Program by hosting a dinner.  Events like this give people a chance to get together and at the same time support a worthy cause," said Dr. Eileen Abels, the iSchool's Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. "Many of the guests suggested that we make this an annual event!"

The Spectrum Scholarship Program - which was launched in 1997 - is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of under-representation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession while serving as a model for ways to bring attention to larger diversity issues in the future. According to ALA's website, the program has awarded more than 600 scholarships to students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to academic excellence, the library profession, and community service.

Four iSchool at Drexel Library and Information Science students have been chosen as Spectrum Scholars during the past two years.
