Visit the IMLS Booth at the ALA Exhibition Hall Booth # 3958 Washington, DC-Marsha L. Semmel, acting director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), Mary Chute, deputy director for libraries, and other Institute staff will participate in various events during the American Library Association (ALA) annual conference in Washington, D.C. June 24-29, 2010. For a list of sessions pertaining to IMLS and IMLS-funded grants, please visit booth # 3958 on June 25-28. The conference and exhibits will be located in the Washington Convention Center at 801 Mount Vernon Place, NW, Washington, D.C. Below is a list of IMLS-related sessions, dates, and locations: REACH 21: Preparing the Next Generation of Librarians for Leadership Mary Alice Ball, senior program officer for IMLS's Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program, will speak at a ceremony honoring this year's Spectrum Scholars. The Spectrum Scholarship Program is ALA's national diversity and recruitment effort designed to address the specific issue of underrepresentation of critically needed ethnic librarians within the profession. This year's 50 Spectrum Scholars and 20 students selected from diversity recruitment initiatives across the country will attend the event. June 25, 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m., Washington Plaza Hotel, 10 Thomas Circle, NW, Washington, D.C. National Preservation Week: Pass It On! ALCTS, AASL, PLA, AASL Collection Management & Technical Services; Build on ALA's first Preservation Week (May 9-15, 2010) to celebrate collecting, increase preservation savvy, grow audiences, and strengthen community partnerships. Speakers representing different types of libraries from around the country will share tools and stories from 2010 programs to help you plan for 2011. International Leadership: the U.S. - China Librarian Collaboration Project, ALA - IRC As the world is becoming more globalized, it is critical that librarians find effective ways to collaborate. The Think Globally Act Globally project, funded by IMLS and the Chinese Ministry of Culture, carried out by a partnership between the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Chinese American Librarians Association and the Library Society of China, aims to promote collaboration and exchange between librarians in U.S. and China. LSTA Coordinators' Discussion Group LSTA coordinators convene for an opportunity to share updates on current activity in their states, and share problems in need of a collaborative solution. Translation Station: Tools for Serving New Americans, PLA This program includes a demo and giveaway of "Translation Station," a communication tool for library staff to respond to simple requests for library resources and services in other languages, and training kits to introduce staff to language phrases and different cultures. We will also discuss lessons learned from the Free Library of Philadelphia's LSTA grant, and provide an opportunity for participants to share best practices for serving New Americans.
