"A LIFE WELL LIVED" - A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR DR. EDWARD G. HOLLEY
A memorial service for former School of Information and Library Science
dean, Dr. Edward G. Holley, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12,
2010 at Gerrard Hall on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
campus. Hosted by his children, Gailon, Jens, Amy and Beth, the service
will honor and celebrate the life of their father who was one of the
library world's most outstanding leaders and highly regarded by those who
knew him.

SILS PARTNERS WITH DUKE FOR ONC HEALTH INFORMATICS GRANT
SILS, in partnership with Duke University and other units at UNC at Chapel
Hill, has been awarded a grant by the Health and Human Services (HHS)
Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).
The grant for $865,000 will be used to recruit and fund students for the
emerging health informatics program at SILS.

DR. EVELYN DANIEL TO RETIRE
Two years after her official retirement, Dr. Evelyn Daniel, associate dean
for Academic Affairs and professor, will leave the School of Information
and Library Science (SILS) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill to enjoy a much deserved retirement.

The Fall 2009 issue of "Library Trends," a quarterly standard in the field
of library science scholarship, features "Workforce Issues in Library and
Information Science." Edited by Drs. Joanne Gard Marshall, alumni
distinguished professor, SILS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill; Paul Solomon, associate professor, School of Library and Information
Science, University of South Carolina and former associate dean of Academic

BLITZ CELEBATES 2010 AS THE YEAR OF CATALOGING RESEARCH!
Library of Congress guests, School of Information and Library Science
(SILS) students and faculty, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Libraries staff and visitors from the Research Triangle Park and
surrounding libraries came together April 19, 2010 in the Davis Library on
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus for a celebration
that featured a blitz on cataloging research.

T-RACES PROJECT DOCUMENTING HISTORY OF RACIAL ZONING IN US CITIES IN THE
1930s NOW ONLINE
The Sustainable Archives and Leveraging Technologies (SALT) team at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of
California Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI) are pleased to announce
the enhanced Web site for T-RACES (Testbed for the Redlining Archives of
California's Exclusionary Spaces), a project funded through an Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS) National Leadership Grant and developed
by Dr. Richard Marciano, School of Information and Library Science (SILS)
professor; Chien-Yi Hou, SILS research associate; and Dr. David Goldberg,
director of UCHRI Institute.

DIGCCURR PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTE
Beginning May 16, SILS faculty, students and participants affiliated with
the DigCCurr Professional Institute lead and took part in a five-day
workshop that addressed current trends in digital curation. The workshop
was designed to help library and information science professionals stay
up-to-date with the latest work being done in the field.

Lee Dirks, director of Education & Scholarly Communications in Microsoft's

OCLC/Frederick G. Kilgour Lecture in Information and Library Science on

A special SILS reunion will take place in Washington D.C. as we reunite
with current and old friends and colleagues, meet our new dean - Dr. Gary

door prizes and enjoy hor dourves. A cash bar will be available. The
reunion will take place during the ALA Annual Conference on Sunday, June

dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor at the School of

DR. JANE GREENBERG WINS 2010 JESSE H. SHERA AWARD FOR DISTINGUISHED
PUBLISHED RESEARCH
Dr. Jane Greenberg, professor and director of the Metadata Research Center,
of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been awarded the 2010 Jesse H. Shera Award for
Distinguished Published Research by the Library Research Round Table of the
American Library Association (ALA).

JOANNE MARSHALL & CONNIE SCHARDT RECEIVE MLA FELLOWSHIPS
Dr. Joanne Gard Marshall, alumni distinguished professor at SILS at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been awarded the Medical
Library Association's (MLA) Donald A. B. Lindberg Research Fellowship.
Connie Schardt, current president of MLA, adjunct instructor at SILS and
associate director for Public Services at the Duke University Medical
Center Library, received an MLA Fellowship from the Association.

ROBERT MOLYNEUX SELECTED SILS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS
Robert Molyneux (Ph.D. '84) was selected as a 2010 Distinguished Alumnus of
the School of Information and Library Science. He received the School's
highest honor bestowed to its alumni, the Distinguished Alumni Award,
during the 2010 spring commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 9. Molyneux
also delivered the commencement address to a crowd of nearly 600,
"...something commensurate to our capacity for wonder."

SILS ALUMNA, JOYCE L. OGBURN, ELECTED ACRL VICE PRESIDENT/PRESIDENT ELECT
Joyce L. Ogburn, SILS alumna, university librarian and director of the
University of Utah Marriott Library, has been elected
vice-president/president-elect of the Association of College and Research
Libraries (ACRL).  She will become president-elect following the 2010 ALA
Annual Conference in Washington D.C. and assume the presidency in July 2011
for a one-year term.

FELIX PORTNOY RECEIVES GOOGLE AWARD
SILS graduate student, Felix Portnoy, is the recipient of a $50,000 award
from Google's Research Award program for his proposal, "Modeling the Effect
of Habituation on Banner Blindness as a Function of Repetition and Search
Type." The award will support Portnoy's current research on banner
blindness.

MOVERS & SHAKERS: ERNIE COX RECOGNIZED IN THE "LIBRARY JOURNAL"
Ernie Cox, doctoral student at SILS at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill and media specialist at St. Timothy's School in Raleigh, has
been named a "Mover & Shaker" by the Library Journal.

MEGHAN GAHERTY RECEIVES 2010 IREX FELLOWSHIP
SILS student Meghan Gaherty (MSLS) has been named a 2010 IREX Fellow. The
International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) "is an international
nonprofit organization providing leadership and innovative programs to
improve the quality of education, strengthen independent media, and foster
pluralistic civil society development," according to its Web site. As part
of her IREX fellowship experience, Gaherty will spend three months working
in Washington, D.C., followed by a two week stint in Romania.

STUDENTS NAMED 2010 NCSU LIBRARIES FELLOWS
North Carolina State University Libraries recently announced their new
fellows for next fall, two of which are SILS students. Beginning this
summer, Adam Rogers and L. Hill Taylor will start their two year term
appointments as NCSU Libraries Fellows. During that time, Rogers and Taylor
will be working on a variety of projects related to academic librarianship
at North Carolina State University.

AARON BRUBAKER, HINAR POLCZER AND DOUGLAS EDMUNDS WIN IT AWARDS
Aaron Brubaker (MSIS '06), assistant director of Instructional Technology
at SILS and two other SILS alumni were recognized for their outstanding
service to their schools and to the university during the 18th annual IT
Awards ceremony hosted by UNC's Information Technology Services on
Thursday, April 15, 2010.

DANA HANSON-BAUDAUF AWARDED FIRST PLACE
Dana Hanson-Baldauf, SILS doctoral candidate, has been awarded first place
for her poster presentation in the University of North Carolina at Chapel

Doctoral student Fred Stutzman has been awarded the Graduate Mentor Support

RUNNING THE STATES - SCOTT ADAMS RAN ACROSS GEORGIA
In spite of injuries, Scott Adams, director of Information Technology at
the School of Information and Library Science at UNC at Chapel Hill, once
again put on his running shoes this time to run across the state of
Georgia. Scott has been training for the 260 mile run that began at Ft.
Benning, GA on May 27, 2010 and ended in Savannah, GA on May 30.
