Many of you are aware that Louisiana State University School of Library
& Information Science is being proposed for elimination as a cost saving
measure.   Here is the message from the LSU Chancellor outlining the
plan:

  From the director of the LSU SLIS is Professor Beth Paskoff's message:

  "The Chancellor's plan is to phase out the MLIS program, giving current
students and those who have already been admitted an opportunity to
complete the degree over the next two years or so.  In order for this
proposal to take effect, it first needs the approval of the Board of
Supervisors and, subsequently, the Board of Regents."

The ALISE Board of Directors has taken action by sending a letter in
support of SLIS to the LSU Board of Supervisors and the Louisiana Board
of
