Title: Library Science Internship Position

Hours: The position extends throughout one full year, full time, 40 hours per week.
Salary: This is a paid position at a rate of $8.50/hour with optional free housing (a taxable benefit) provided.

 
Longwood Gardens Library seeks an MLS student or recent graduate to gain experience in the operations and management of a special/research library. 

Located in Kennett Square, PA, Longwood Gardens is approximately 45 minutes southwest of Philadelphia. 

Position is available September 2010 - August 2011.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

- Perform circulation maintenance routines, such as check-in/check-out and overdue processing.  Shelve books and compile usage statistics.
- Assist and train patrons in the use of computers and software, A/V equipment, copier, microform equipment.
- Work with librarian to develop projects aimed at furthering the particular library interests of the student.  Projects may be in the areas of cataloging, collection development, management, reference, serials, technical services, etc.
- Publish a monthly newsletter for library employees and volunteers, meant to keep all library staff up-to-date on current procedures and changing practices.
- Perform basic reference interviews and services.  Become familiar with and able to train others in using Longwood Gardens' EOS International integrated library system (ILS), OCLC Worldcat, Agricola, and other relevant databases.
- Assist with Interlibrary Loan tasks as needed.
- Assist with serials check-in, routing, and binding routines as needed.
- Learn copy cataloging procedures and assist in cataloging new books as needed.
- Assist with project work involving digital imaging, the ILS, and the Archives.
- Perform various daily administrative and technical tasks, such as typing, filing, taking phone calls, basic book repairs, etc.
- Participate in student activities and field trips as scheduled.
- Develop and assist with additional projects and responsibilities as needed.

 

Qualifications:

- Be pursuing or have completed a Masters of Science in Library Science (MLS).
- Be able and willing to work independently.
- Have excellent communications and interpersonal skills, including ability to deal with people in a courteous, patient, and professional manner.  
- Have physical ability to push fully-loaded book carts and handle heavy or oversize volumes.  Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Be willing to follow all Longwood Gardens' policies and procedures.
- Have a valid driver's license.
