Announcement from Roberson Co:
On Saturday, May 8th the Robertson County Master Gardeners will hold their
2010 Garden Walk (self-guided tour) of six gardens in the Springfield
Historic District from 10am until 2pm.
Tickets for the Garden Walk are $3 per person and $5 per couple
(children under 12 are free). Tickets and a brochure with map are sold in
front of the Ag. Extension Office, located at 408 North Main Street in
Springfield, TN. on the courthouse square.

Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition ³The White House Garden²
Comes to Polk Presidential Hall
COLUMBIA, TN- ³The White House Garden,² an exhibition developed and
supported by the White House Historical Association and organized for travel
by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES), has
opened at Polk Presidential Hall on the grounds of the James K. Polk Home.
The exhibition, which debuted at the U.S. Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C.
in 2008, will stay at the Hall through June 13 before continuing on its
national tour. Visitors to ³The White House Garden² will be introduced to a
fascinating historic landscape through a collection of photos, drawings,
maps, and family and business correspondence. The Polk Home is
supplementing the exhibition with original artifacts from President and Mrs.
Polkıs years in the White House including French china with floral patterns.
Since the 1790ıs, Presidents, First Families, renowned landscape
architects, and countless other Americans have contributed to the
development of the formal gardens and parkland surrounding the ³Peopleıs
House,² shaping the land into an extraordinary national treasure and the
oldest continuously landscaped garden in the U.S. The stately grounds have
served as an impressive stage for everything from elegant weddings and royal
receptions to Easter egg hunts and President Eisenhowerıs personal putting
green.
Polk Presidential Hall and the James K. Polk Home are open from
9 a.m. to
5 p.m., Monday- Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets for
³The White House Garden² can be purchased at the Polk Homeıs front desk for
$5 per adult and $3 per child. Guests can also buy combination tickets for
both Presidential Hall and the Polk Home. The site is located at 301-305 W.
Seventh Street in downtown Columbia.
The White House Historical Association, established in 1961, is
a nonprofit organization whose goal is to enhance the understanding,
appreciation, and enjoyment of the White House. All proceeds from the
associationıs trusts, publications, and other items are used to fund
acquisitions of historic furnishings and artwork for the permanent
collection, assist in the preservation of the public rooms, and further its
educational mission.
SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and
research programs with millions of people outside Washington D.C. for more
than 50 years. SITES connects Americans to their shared cultural heritage
through a wide range of exhibitions about art, science, and history, which
are shown wherever people live, work, and play.
