Special course at LSU by and about Richard Peck

A Writer's Career: The Middle Grade and Young Adult Fiction of Richard Peck.

This course will focus on the prolific writing career of Richard 
Peck.  Mr. Peck has published more than 35 books, received the 
Newbery Award in 2001 in recognition of his book A Year Down 
Yonder, as the most distinguished contribution to American 
literature for children.  He also received the Mystery Writers of 
America's Edgar Allan Poe Award, has been a finalist for the 
National Book Award, and in 2001 received the National Humanities 
Medal.  The course will feature Mr. Peck discussing his writings
before and after the Newbery Award.  He will emphasize
"Five Questions to Ask Your Fiction" and recurring elements
such as peer group leaders, portraits of fathers, the parallel past,
conformity and enlightenment, identity, elders and uses of comedy. 

Richard Peck has been an adjunct member of the faculty of the
LSU School of Library & Information Science for more than 25 years. 
He has participated in summer classes about literature for young
adolescents at LSU for many years, but this will be the first, and only,
course that he will teach about his own writings. 

SCHEDULE
The class will meet at LSU July 30 (8:30-4:30) and July 31 8:30-4:30)
AND again at LSU on October 22 (4-9 pm)and October 23 (8:30-4:30) 
There will an online session in September, with the 
date to be determined.

GRADES

Students will register for this as a regular SUMMER course, but will receive a grade of Incomplete.  The Incomplete will be changed to a regular grade when all assignments have been submitted in early November.

READINGS
Students will read four of Mr. Peck's books before the class meets on July 30:
1.  Anonymously Yours
2.  Invitations to the World (this is out of print but can be found in libraries)
3.  one book written before he received the Newbery Award (students select the title they read)
4.  one book written after he received the Newbery Award (students select the title they read)

The cost of this three credit course for Louisiana residents is $639.  The cost for non-residents is $1096.
