Dr. Caroline Haythornthwaite, Leverhulme Visiting Professor, Institute of Education, University of London (2009-10) and Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science(GSLIS), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has been appointed Director of the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Haythornthwaite’s five-year term as Director will begin in August, 2010. Caroline Haythornthwaite is an outstanding scholar with an international reputation in multiple research fields: Internet research, computer-mediated communication, e-learning, social network analysis and social informatics. She was among the first to apply social network analysis to the study of online communities and online learning, and she has produced seminal work in these areas. She has authored more than fifty highly cited book chapters and scholarly articles and has co-edited three books. Major publications include The Internet in Everyday Life (Blackwell, 2002, with Barry Wellman); Learning, Culture and Community in Online Education: Research and Practice (Peter Lang, 2004, with Michelle M. Kazmer), and the Handbook of E-Learning Research (Sage, 2007, with Richard Andrews). Dr. Haythornthwaite received a B.Sc. in Psychology from Trent University, and an M.A. in Psychology, a Masters in Information Systems and a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Toronto. She is currently at the University of London as the 2009/2010 Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Culture and Pedagogy, where she is researching, writing, and presenting on /Learning Networks, /which encompasses overlapping themes of social networks, computer networks, and learning. A faculty member at GSLIS at the University of Illinois since 1996, Dr. Haythornthwaite brings administrative experience and an excellent teaching record to SLAIS. She has served as Coordinator of the GSLIS undergraduate Minor in Information Technology Studies, Interim Associate Dean, Chair of the Doctoral Studies program, and Co-Director of the Community Informatics Initiative Research Center.
