Special Summer Workshop: Creating Student Responsibility for Deeper
Learning
Co-sponsored by OIT's Innovative Technology Consulting initiative and
TENN TLC, this workshop addresses the need to develop student
responsibility for learning and create opportunities both in and out
of class for deeper learning. We will start with considering your
objectives for your course and your students. How can you encourage
more independent learning? How can you move students to higher levels
of critical and creative thinking? What "blended" environment using
technology and active learning techniques can help you accomplish your
goals for student responsibility? We will explore course design and
the components that you need for more effective student learning and
better use of time in and out of class.

Date: Wednesday, June 16
Time: 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Location: TBD

For more information or to RSVP, contact Gina Phipps at
[log in to unmask] or 974-7912. Please RSVP by Tuesday, June 1.

Best Practices for Developing and Delivering
Online Instruction
University teaching and learning is no longer confined to the physical
classroom. Faculty and students can now connect and engage in learning
conversations through a variety of Internet communications
technologies, such as Online@UT (Blackboard) and LiveOnline@UT (Saba
Centra). While the spaces in which learning takes place may look
different, there are some fundamental best practices for supporting
learning in online environments. This guide was developed by faculty,
staff and students at UT, including members of the UT Learning
Consortium, the Office of Information Technology / Innovative
Technology Consulting, and the Tennessee Teaching and Learning Center,
with the purpose of providing guidance to faculty offering online
instruction.

This guide provides a checklist of best practices which can be used by
faculty to self-assess the quality of their online instruction. It can
also be used for a peer-evaluation of your course by a colleague. It
can be used by units and departments as they begin to develop online
instruction, courses, and programs. The checklist also has an
accompanying glossary and bibliography of additional resources.

and Learning Center website:
