The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library at Penn State Hershey
seeks
a Librarian for the position of Associate Director/Coordinator for
Education & Instruction. Reporting to the Director, the
incumbent will assist the Director in planning and executing the
day-to-day operations and lead education and instruction activities at
the Harrell Health Sciences Library, a predominately digital library,
located at Penn State Hershey, the medical campus for The Pennsylvania
State University. The library acquires, organizes, and delivers
information to ensure access to high quality resources and services in
support of the academic, research, clinical and community outreach
missions of Penn State Hershey. This is a tenure track faculty
appointment.
Position Summary:
The Associate Director is a senior level management position whose
primary responsibility is assisting the Director in planning and
executing the day-to-day operation of the library; works with the
director to define a vision for the future and help develop and enhance
services, resources, and programs that actively position the library as
a
key resource within the institution. Direct reports include 3
faculty librarians and 1 staff supervisor. This position is a
member of the Library Administrative Team and contributes to decisions
on
policies, operations, and library budget. The Associate Director is
also responsible for the overall coordination of library-related
instructional activities for the Harrell HSL and the integration of EBM
into the College of Medicine (COM) curriculum. Works closely with
faculty to design, develop and teach a variety of classes, workshops
and
course-integrated instruction. Designs and develops online tutorials
and
provides individual consultations and orientations. Provides
expertise and support for instructional technologies used in teaching
and
learning; participates in collection development activities, reference
services, and the liaison program. Evaluates new and existing
library programs, services and resources; compiles/contributes to
statistical and other library reports. Critical skills needed for this
position include leadership and the ability to function effectively in
a
team environment; flexibility and the capacity to embrace change in a
diverse, dynamic, and evolving organization; and a facility for
cross-departmental communications.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Encourages and promotes communication, collaboration, and
excellent
customer service throughout the library
- Oversees the daily operation of the library including
coordination
among library service areas and units, development and interpretation
of
policies and procedures, and leads faculty & staff in the
development
of new programs and services.
- Provides leadership and accepts and executes responsibility and
accountability for the physical facility, services, collections and
staff
in the director’s absence.
- Oversees assessment of user needs, evaluation of services,
marketing
and planning in collaboration with the Director and Library Faculty;
contributes to the development of outcome measures.
- Develops reports such as the annual report, strategic plan, and
timelines in collaboration with the Director
- Fosters a creative, team-oriented work environment including the
coordination of internal committees as appropriate
- Involved in personnel management and staff development, including
hiring, evaluations, and input into salary increases (merit); direct
reports include 3 faculty librarians and 1 staff supervisor (Public
Services & Outreach)
- Chairs the Library Education Team with responsibility for the
overall
coordination of library-related instructional activities, delegates
teaching responsibilities as appropriate, reviews program activities
and
evaluates need for changes
- Designs, develops and teaches a variety of classes, workshops and
course-integrated instruction; works with COM Faculty to integrate EBM
into COM curriculum
- Designs and develops online tutorials
- Participates in Library Orientations for new medical, graduate
and
nursing students, participates in new resident orientation, and the
technology fair
- Provides expertise and support for instructional technologies
used in
teaching and learning
- Participates as a member of the Reference Team, provides
reference
assistance, regularly scheduled for reference desk coverage
- Contributes content to the library Web page
- Participates in the Library Liaison Program
- Takes part in the assessment and implementation of new
technologies
- Participates as a member of the Collection Development Team ,
providing input into the identification, review, budget allocation, and
selection of resources in all formats
- Contributes to the profession through librarianship, teaching
&
learning, service, research, and involvement in professional
organizations.
Required Qualifications:
- MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited institution.
- 5-plus years experience with increasing levels of responsibility
and
supervision of professional and paraprofessional staff.
- Some experience with instructional design, educational
technology,
and library resources. Aware of current trends in Academic Health
Sciences Libraries and medical education.
- Experience using technology to support service innovation
- Demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging information
technologies
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, service
oriented,
rapidly changing environment to accomplish mutual goals
- Ability to work independently and effectively across
organizational
lines and in collaboration with colleagues throughout the University
Libraries to build strong relationships
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong
analytical,
problem-solving, and decision making skills
- Strong management, leadership, and organizational skills with a
commitment to diversity; project management skills
- Ability to achieve tenure through effective job performance,
contributions to the profession through research and scholarly
publications and involvement in regional or national professional
organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in medical library environment, experience working
with
health sciences faculty and/or user groups.
- Understand the principles of adult learning and training
- Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals
- Budget management experience
- Working knowledge of integrated library systems
- Ability to develop and execute a marketing plan
