Head of Access Services

Responsibilities: Primary duties consist of, but are not limited to the following: manage the activities of all units in Access Services including circulation (which provides 89.5 hours of service each week in addition to opening and closing the building), reserves, stacks management, interlibrary loan/document delivery, and courier-delivery (consortia); develop, interpret, and implement policies; maintain the library web pages related to the department; participate in reference desk rotation; serve on appropriate library and university committees and task forces. Oversee copyright compliance as it pertains to ILL and reserve issues. Assist in distance education initiatives. This position also includes collection development responsibilities and may include library instruction.

This position is an academic non-tenure track position.

Required: MLS from an ALA accredited program; minimum 3 years of increasingly responsible supervisory experience of full-time employees in an access services department; experience in providing services to on-campus and remote users; demonstrated familiarity with electronic systems and services; demonstrated mastery of technical skills and knowledge of technologies for requesting and delivery; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral; demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a wide range of library users; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively; a commitment to public service. Some evening and weekend work required.

Preferred: Three years working in an academic or public library in access services; experience with circulation services (either as a paraprofessional or a professional); familiarity with Innovative Interfaces Millennium integrated library system; familiarity with OCLC Illiad; working knowledge of Ariel and other scanning and imaging systems. Paid summer internship available. The National Law Enforcement Museum (www.LawEnforcementMuseum.org), a museum in development, is seeing interns to assist with NLEM’s online catalog project.

The Library Internship will encompass implementation of the Museum’s Ex Libris’s Voyager OPAC, including, but not limited to various national metadata standards, including MARC21, NACO/SACO, and other authority work.

• Creation and implementation of tag tables.
• Working on OPAC configuration.
• Creation of NACO/SACO compliant authorities for future submission to LC.
• Copy cataloging using Z39.5, generally through the LC catalog; possibly some original cataloging and LC call number creation.
• Creating bibliographic and holdings records of artifacts into Voyager.

Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate-level Library and Information Management Services program and possess strong time management, communication, and organizational skills. Applicant must be available to 36 hours per week, May 2010 through August 2010.

Work will take place at both the main office in the Penn Quarter, Washington, DC, and at an offsite storage facility in Forestville, Maryland. The DC office is Metro accessible. Car transportation to Forestville would be helpful.

The Archives Internship will encompass surveying, inventorying and basic rehousing, processing, and finding aid creation for various manuscript and archival collections held by the Museum, based on national cataloging standards for archival and manuscript collections. Creation of basic catalog records for inclusion in the Museum’s OPAC.

Work may consist of one of more of the following activities:

• Survey of manuscript and archival collections to create inventory
• Basic processing of collections based on DACS; MPM
• Creation of finding aid for each collection/EAD encoding of the finding aid
• Creation of basic collection-level bibliographic/holdings records for OPAC

Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate-level Library and Information Management Services program and possess strong time management, communication, and organizational skills. Applicant must be available to 32 hours per week, May 2010 through August 2010.

Collections Management Internship Opportunity, National Law Enforcement Museum (Washington, D.C.)

Paid summer internship available. The National Law Enforcement Museum (www.LawEnforcementMuseum.org), a museum in development, is seeking an intern to assist with NLEM collection management duties.

The Collections Management Internship will encompass artifact records management, cataloging, documentation, handling, and inventory, to include:

• Processing and management of museum records, including Deeds of Gift, Receipts of Objects, and other tracking documents;
• Cataloging artifacts into FileMaker collections database;
• Basic inventory of collections;
• Handling, tagging, and re-housing of artifacts in the Museum’s off-site storage facility.

Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate-level Museum Studies program and possess strong time-management, communication, and organizational skills. Applicant must be available 32 hours per week, May 2010 through August 2010. Although public transportation is available, having own transportation will be helpful.

Work will take place at both the main office in the Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C., and at an off-site storage facility in Forestville, Maryland, with the bulk of the time being spent off-site. The D.C. office is Metro-accessible.

Reference and Instruction Librarian

 

Description:

 

The primary responsibilities of the Reference and Instruction Librarian are conducting class sessions teaching information literacy skills and assessing student learning outcomes; providing information assistance in person and by telephone, as well as through virtual services; managing access to online resources on the library’s web site; and providing general reference and research assistance.  Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills; knowledge of information resources and library practices, strong customer service orientation, and the ability to interact positively and productively in a collegial academic environment. This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of the Library.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Providing library instruction services, including conducting class sessions and web based instruction, incorporating information literacy skills

 

Developing and implementing technological enhancements pertaining to reference and instruction services including online tutorials and guides

 

Providing reference services including virtual services through the Library’s web site

 

Managing access to electronic resources

 

Providing Information Desk and Reference services, including some evening and weekend hours as needed

 

Participating in library public relations activities

 

Acting as the Library liaison to assigned academic departments

 

Selecting and deselecting materials in assigned subject areas

 

Serving on University Committees and participating in University activities

 

Participating in professional organizations and development activities

 

Supervising and training work study student assistants

 

Other duties as assigned

 

 

Required Qualifications: Master of Science in Library or Information Science

from an ALA accredited program.  Must be eligible to hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in providing reference and instruction services in an academic library.
