TITLE:  Head, Content and Information Resources Management

 

LOCATION:  Health Sciences Libraries (HSL)

                                               

 

THE LIBRARIES: 

Among the largest academic research libraries in North America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than 50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. HEALTH SCIENCES LIBRARIES (HSL):

The HSL supports 6 health sciences schools – Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work; 2 academic medical centers – UW Medical Center (on campus) and the Harborview Medical Center (downtown Seattle); the growing biomedical and clinical research campus in the South Lake Union neighborhood of downtown Seattle; the 5-state medical education program (WWAMI); and, numerous centers, institutes, programs, and affiliated institutions. The HSL is a unit of the University Libraries. It is a leader among the national community of academic health sciences libraries and has long been known for innovative information management programs and services. THE POSITION:

This management level position is responsible for the selection, licensing or purchasing, management, organization and integration of information resources for the health sciences. This position is responsible for the management of an annual acquisitions budget of about $2.5 million and supervising 2.5 FTE classified staff positions. This position oversees the functional areas of monographic selection and processing and serials processing. The Head, Content and Information Resources Management, is a member of the HSL Management Team, and works closely with the HSL librarian liaison information management team. This position also works closely with the UW Libraries’ Director of Information Resources and Scholarly Communication and the Libraries Information Resources Council. This position is the HSL contact for scholarly communication, digital library, translational science/medicine, and biomedical research issues, and reports to the Director, Health Sciences Library.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

* Responsible for health sciences information resources, including selection, negotiation, licensure or purchase, online access, processing, and budget management. Electronic is the privileged format for information resources but all formats are managed as needed. Current annual budget for HSL information resources is over $2.5 million.

* Leader of the HSL Information Resources Team, including technical processing (2.5 FTE) and monographic selection (coordinating a team of liaison librarians).

* Advises the Director, HSL, on information resources management and scholarly communication issues.

* Strives to ensure that HSL information resource access is broadly in alignment with information needs in health sciences research, education, and patient care.

* Proactively manages the interface of information resource management policies and practices between HSL and the University Libraries. Advocates on behalf of health sciences faculty, staff, and student information needs.

* Represents the HSL on scholarly communication, digital library, translational science/medicine, and biomedical research issues, and serves on Libraries and UW committees as appropriate.

* May represent HSL at Libraries, University, and other meetings.

* Promotes communication between HSL and other Libraries units and health sciences schools and departments.

* Evaluates new digital information products, including journals, reference texts and multimedia materials.

* Works closely with the HSL librarian liaison program, communicating with and supporting the librarian liaisons regarding information resources and scholarly communication issues.

* Performs professional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship and service. Demonstrates evidence of continuing professional growth.

* Assumes other responsibilities as appropriate.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.

* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

* Five years experience in an academic health sciences library.

* Experience in the selection and acquisition of health sciences information resources in a large, research-intensive academic health sciences environment, including contract negotiation and budget management.

* Demonstrated knowledge of health sciences research information needs and use of information resources.

* Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication issues, practices, and trends in the health sciences.

* Excellent communication skills are a requirement for this position and for all Libraries’ staff members. Basic expectations are described in the Libraries Personal Communication Responsibility Guidelines.

 

Preferred:

* Knowledge of translational science/medicine issues, trends, and information needs and uses.

* Familiarity with e-science issues, trends, and implications for health sciences libraries.

 

SALARY:  $55,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

 

BENEFITS:  Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.  Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year.  No state or local income tax.
