Director, Learning Commons Services

The NCSU Libraries invites applications for the position of Director, Learning Commons Services to lead the planning, management, and oversight of the Libraries’ technology-equipped learning spaces, ensuring continuous innovation and excellent user experience. Works closely with students and faculty to identify and meet their changing needs, focusing on both the library’s physical facilities and its online environment. Plays a leadership role in collaborative efforts to adapt and integrate Web 2.0 technologies, mobile platforms, and other emerging tools into delivery of information and services. Collaborates with other managers and administrators in supporting the full range of Commons services, designs staff development activities, promotes and markets services, and participates in student engagement and program/event planning and delivery.

Required qualifications include: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in library or information science plus relevant professional experience. Demonstrated record of engagement with a user community and commitment to creative, high-quality library services and facilities. Knowledge of applications of current and emerging technologies as they contribute to meeting the needs of students and researchers. Experience with the latest communication technologies and with social software/spaces; knowledge of library information technology infrastructure. Ability to plan, design, and implement new services, projects, and programs.

POSITION OPENING – Assistant Library Director/Reference Librarian

The Irvin L. Young Memorial Library in Whitewater, Wisconsin, is seeking an experienced, energetic, customer-focused librarian to be the Assistant Library Director and Reference Librarian.  Irvin L. Young Memorial Library has a service population of 15,500.  We are located in northwest Walworth County and are a member of the Mid-Wisconsin Federated Library System and the SHARE consortium, which encompasses Dodge, Jefferson, Racine, Walworth, and Washington counties.

The position requires an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution plus a minimum of three years of professional library experience.  One to three years of management and supervisory experience preferred.  Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish desirable. 

Candidates are expected to possess strong supervisory and training skills, team-player and leadership skills, excellent reference and readers' advisory knowledge and skills, effective communication and organizational skills, and knowledge of current library and technology trends.  Candidates are also expected to be eligible for Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Grade One (1) Library Certification.

The Division of Preservation and Access of the National Endowment for the Humanities will be accepting applications for grants in its Humanities Collections and Reference Resources program. These grants support projects to preserve and create intellectual access to such collections as books, journals, manuscript and archival materials, maps, still and moving images, sound recordings, art, and objects of material culture. Awards also support the creation of reference materials, online resources, and research tools of major importance to the humanities. Maximum awards are $350,000 for up to three years.

Eligible activities include:
* arranging and describing archival and manuscript collections;
* cataloging collections of printed works, photographs, recorded sound, moving images, art, and material culture;
* providing conservation treatment for collections (including mass deacidification);
* digitizing collections;
* preserving and improving access to born-digital sources;
* developing databases, virtual collections, or other electronic resources to codify information on a subject or to provide integrated access to selected humanities materials;
* creating encyclopedias;
* preparing linguistic tools, such as historical and etymological dictionaries, corpora, and reference grammars;

Job Description: The Woody Guthrie Archives seeks to hire a maximum of two summer interns to work on a variety of independent and collaborative projects. This internship seeks to provide students who are currently pursuing a Master of Library Science (MLS) or some related variation, or who have recently graduated, with summer work experience in the field of Archives Management.
Tasks will be assigned dependent on the interns skills and interests, and may include the following:
* Processing a collection of vintage folk music and related posters
* Cataloguing an historic collection of two thousand record albums
* Accessioning folk music periodicals into an existing collection
* Processing a small collection of personal papers
* Website development and content upgrade
* Providing reference assistance to in-house researchers
* Transcription of original Woody Guthrie lyrics
* Accessioning new materials into the Archives
* Assisting Archivist with licensing, copy requests, and other Archival duties.

Internships run for a 10-week period from late-May through July 2010. The duration of Summer Internships vary depending upon the applicants' availability; however, a minimum commitment of four weeks is required
for all internships.

Job Requirements: Qualified applicants will possess an academic or practical background in Archives or History. A strong academic record combined with previous Archival experience, including arrangement and description of Archival materials, is preferred. An appreciation for or knowledge of American Folk Music is beneficial. Current students or recent graduates are encouraged to apply. Repository Description: Established in 1996, the Woody Guthrie Archives holds the largest collection of Woody Guthrie material in the world, and has provided source material for many award winning publications,
special projects, exhibitions, and films. Most recently, the Woody Guthrie Archives assisted in the production of the 2008 Grammy Award winning recording "The Live Wire" which features a never-before-heard
1949 live Guthrie performance that the Archives received as a donation in the late-1990s.
