Highlighting Changes in the 2009 MUTCD

What This is About: This course is intended to familiarize public works directors, street superintendents, engineers and technicians with a selection of significant changes in the 2009 Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The MUTCD is the national standard for all traffic control devices on any roadway open to public travel regardless of jurisdiction or ownership, addressing the design and application of traffic signs, pavement markings, and traffic control signals.

The 2009 Edition of the MUTCD contains many significant changes, including revisions to the document’s format, elimination of metric units, new and relocated sections, and many new or revised traffic control devices. Highlights of these changes include larger signs for multi-lane conventional roads, new roundabout sign and marking designs, increased requirements for warning signs on horizontal curves, revised traffic signal warrants, upgraded signal design and timing provisions, and more. These changes will be identified and discussed throughout the course.
