Student@Tennessee, Monday, Apr 26, 2010 Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Special --- Recent changes to the way the federal government distributes and manages student loans will affect how UT Knoxville students receive financial aid. The changes, which recently passed into law, shift the processing of federal student loans away from private lenders and to the U.S. Department of Education. UT Knoxville students should see few, if any, changes, although many of you will need to complete additional paperwork. The changes go into effect beginning with the summer term. Call Financial Aid at 974-3131. --- Do you know any students graduating this spring that would be good to highlight in on-campus publications or to the media? The UT Knoxville Office of Communications and Marketing is looking for students with interesting stories. Examples might include siblings graduating together; older-than-average (or younger-than-average) students graduating; or graduates who have been great influences on your department, college or organization for any number of reasons. Feel free to submit a short story about why a certain graduate should be featured. Send submissions to Bridget Hardy at [log in to unmask] --- Meet Coach Derek Dooley -- The academic year is quickly drawing to a close, which means football season is just around the corner. Students are invited to special event where they will have a chance to meet new UT football coach Derek Dooley. The event, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, will be held in the football practice facility in Neyland-Thompson Sports Center at the corner of Lake Loudoun Boulevard and Johnny Majors Drive. Enter through the football museum on Johnny Majors Drive. Refreshments will be served. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good News --- The Office of Graduate Training and Mentorship has been created to help departments campus-wide recruit and retain graduate students, as well as provide them with the very best academic experience and professional development possible. The office will lead UT Knoxville's efforts to: assist with coordination of recruitment and retention efforts; identify and create diversity resources and initiatives that strengthen faculty mentoring and support retention of underrepresented populations in a variety of fields of study across campus; and collaborate with other members of the Graduate School executive staff and related offices to collect and maintain data (e.g., enrollment, graduation, surveys) for tracking and required reporting and for faculty writing grants. Bodine, a retired U.S. ambassador to Yemen -- the reputed land of the Queen of Sheba, home of the Three Wise Men and burial spot of Cain and Abel -- will discuss the future possibilities of the United States' relationship with Yemen, 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the Baker Center Toyota Auditorium. Since the failed Christmas bombing attempt over Detroit, Yemen has reappeared on the American radar as a terrorism threat and much has been written on the country's poverty, governance inadequacies and security challenges. Bodine will talk about whether Yemen is the next front in the war on terror, or an opportunity to commit the resources, people and will to help Yemen change course. The event is free and open to the public. --- The last day of class for the semester is Friday, April 30. Study days begin Monday, May 3, finals begin Tuesday, May 4, and college commencement ceremonies will be held Wednesday, May 12, through Friday, May 14. Students living in residence halls are invited to donate unwanted items to Goodwill instead of throwing them in the trash before moving out for the summer.
