Complete the learning modules, send an e-mail to [log in to unmask] and in return you will receive a care package containing all the necessary items to make it through those long days and nights of studying for exams. --- Meet Coach Derek Dooley -- The academic year is quickly drawing to a close, which means football season is just around the corner. Students are invited to special event where they will have a chance to meet new UT football coach Derek Dooley. The event, from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28, will be held in the football practice facility in Neyland-Thompson Sports Center at the corner of Lake Loudoun Boulevard and Johnny Majors Drive. Enter through the football museum on Johnny Majors Drive. Refreshments will be served. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good News --- "Appalachian Spring," the annual Retail, Hospitality and Tourism Management (RHTM) fundraiser, was held Saturday, March 27, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. More than 300 guests enjoyed a silent auction and a dinner developed by world-class chefs and prepared by students. Net proceeds from the event are approximately $46,500, with $21,125 raised through the auction and $25,375 in sponsorships, ticket sales and donations. Students in the event planning and auction management classes led the effort, and RHTM students worked on every aspect of the event. All proceeds are used to directly support education enrichment experiences for RHTM majors. --- Nine UT Knoxville alumni and graduate students are recipients of the 2010 National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship. The NSF awards are given to students based on their potential as young scientists and for intellectual merit and broader impact. The fellowships are used to further their research. The 2010 NSF recipients are: Jose Alfaro, a UT Knoxville graduate in engineering and graduate student at Clemson University; Bryon Aragam, who studied mathematical sciences at UT Knoxville and is a graduate student in applications of mathematics at the University of California-Los Angeles; Emily Austin, a graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology at UT Knoxville; Michelle Russell, a graduate student in psychology at UT Knoxville; Daniel Sale, a UT Knoxville graduate in mechanical engineering and upcoming graduate student at the University of Washington next year; Todd Schoborg, a graduate student in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology at UT Knoxville; and Michael Vaughn, a UT Knoxville graduate in biochemistry and molecular and cellular engineering and graduate student in chemistry and biochemistry at Arizona State University. Past fellows include numerous Nobel Prize winners, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Google founder Sergey Brin and "Freakon! omics" co-author Steven Levitt. --- Team Living Light, an interdisciplinary group at UT Knoxville, has been accepted into the Solar Decathlon 2011, a Department of Energy event that challenges students to design and build a functioning, energy-efficient, solar-powered house. This is the first time a UT team will compete in the Solar Decathlon. The team is composed of undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in the College of Architecture and Design, College of Engineering and School of Art. http://www.utk.edu/tntoday/2010/04/16/solar-decathlon/ --- Volunteer Dining/ARAMARK is excited to announce a valuable new benefit to having a meal plan. Starting today, students are able to use their Meal Equivalency (ME) option for dinner at all national-branded dining options that ARAMARK offers on campus. These brands include Chick-fil-A, IHOP, Subway, Einstein Bros. Bagels, McAlister's Deli, KFC, Pizza Hut, Quiznos, Petro's and Sbarro. ARAMARK has been conducting focus groups and surveys asking the students what would enhance the meal plan program. The students agreed that the most desired improvement to the program would be more options for using their Meal Equivalency. For more information on Volunteer Dining, visit http://www.utdining.com/ or call 974-7873. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mark Your Calendar --- Tammy Taylor, senior policy analyst for the U.S. President's Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) will talk about global security tonight at 7 p.m. in the Baker Center Toyota Auditorium. Taylor's presentation, "Office of Science and Technology Policy: Understanding Nuclear Denotation Response Preparedness," will discuss how the mission and goals of OSTP are accomplished through interagency coordination. Taylor coordinates radiological and nuclear-related science and technology interests for the National Security and International Affairs Directorate at OSTP. She also leads the Nuclear Defense Research and Development Research and Development Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council. The event is free and open to the public. --- Public lecture on drug prohibition and legalization, 7 p.m. tomorrow in the UC auditorium. Speaker: Timothy Lynch, a legal scholar whose research interests include the war on terrorism, over-criminalization, the drug war, the militarization of police tactics and gun control. In 2000, he served on the National Committee to Prevent Wrongful Executions. Lynch has also filed several amicus briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court in cases involving constitutional rights. Sponsored by the Issues Committee, the event is free and open to the public. --- Earth Day Festival, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the Humanities Plaza. Hosted by SPEAK. ReadyU will be handing out free P&G products and finding ways for UT Knoxville students to be Future Friendly. Zarubin, scientific adviser to the director of the high-energy laser design bureau -- "Granat" -- in Moscow, will discuss recently declassified information on the laser race between the USSR and the U.S. during the Cold War during a visit to UT Knoxville, 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center. The event is free and open to the public. By examining the roles and actions of scientists, politicians, government officials and military personnel who participated in the Soviet High Energy Laser Research and Development programs from 1963 to 1980, Zarubin will look at the inside realities of the laser weapon race. The event begins with an African cultural performance, followed by a dance party with DJ Jason Lovely. Tickets $5 in advance, $10 at the door. Find us on Facebook for more information! --- The UT Student Government Association, the Campus Entertainment Board and the Cultural Attractions Committee will present the 8th annual Volapalooza "Kickoff to Commencement" concert, 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Worlds Fair Park. The concert will feature Passion Pit, Flogging Molly and Asher Roth. Entry is free for UT students with valid student ID. UT faculty, staff, and the general public can purchase tickets for $15 at the UT Central Ticket Office. In conjunction with SGA's "Kickoff to Commencement," UT graduating seniors are invited to arrive at the concert at 5 p.m. for a special Senior Hour, with free prizes, giveaways and activities. Students in all majors are eligible and should have strong writing and editing skills. These scholarships provide financial assistance specifically to students of UT Parents Association members in recognition of exemplary Academic, Leadership, and Service achievements. Eligible students must complete and submit the online application AND submit a transcript/academic history to the Parents Association Office at 412 Student Services Building no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 23. Students can visit http://parents.utk.edu for more information and to access the online application. --- Pursuit is the first University of Tennessee publication dedicated to undergraduate research. The inaugural issue was released in March 2010. Submissions for the Fall 2010 issue will be accepted through May 31, 2010. Pursuit accepts original, research-based submissions from undergraduate students in all academic colleges at UT. Graduates may submit their work within one year of their graduation date. Questions? E-mail [log in to unmask] or visit http://trace.tennessee.edu/pursuit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ready for the World Events --- David Michael Lampton, dean of faculty and director of China studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, will speak about "U.S.-China Security Relations," 7 p.m. tomorrow in the I-House Great, is part of the Great Decisions Program, coordinated by the Center for International Education and funded by the Ready for the World initiative to bring speakers from around the country to UT this semester to address our nation's most pressing foreign policy issues. The final Great Decisions Program lecture will take place on April 28. Retired Ambassador Barbara K. Bodine, lecturer in public and international policy, and director and scholar in the Nation's Service Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, will speak on "The Persian Gulf."
