Dear Professor Cordova,

Please excuse this direct approach.

If you have a readily available mailing list of the Society for Phenomenology and Hermeneutic Study's members and affiliates, please kindly disseminate the following information which would be of interest to them.

A new book on Gustav Shpet (1879-1937), a Russian phenomenologist who had studied with Husserl in Goettingen and had since developed some of his ideas in "Appearance and Sense" (1914) and in texts on aesthetics and hermeneutics, was published in December 2009 by Purdue UP. Shpet's book-length study on the history of hermeneutics, "Hermeneutics and Its Problems" ("Germenevtika i ee problemy, 1918), was written in Russian and is available in full translation in German (1993) and Croatian (2006); extracts have also appeared in Hungarian (1983) and Slovene (2000).

The Purdue UP contains, for the first time in English translation, the following chapters from Shpet's 1918 history of hermeneutics: on Augustin; on Simmel; and on Hermann Swoboda and hermeneutics immediately before World War One; there are also commentaries by Geroge L. Kline to accompany the translations. Previously, only one chapter of Shpet's book, that on Dilthey, was published in English in a journal (1999). The Purdue volume also carries a couple of articles on Shpet's hermeneutics and departture from Husserl in a hermeneutical direction.

The bibliographical details of the Purdue UP volume are:

Gustav Shpet's contribution to philosophy and cutlural theory, ed. Galin Tihanov.

West Lafayette, Ind.: Purdue UP, 2009.
vii, 322 p.
ISBN 9781557535252 (pbk.)

I also attach a brief summary of the volume and the table of contents. Barnes & Noble sell the book at $35.95; University Libraries receive further discount through their suppliers.

With best regards, and thank you for your kindness,
Galin Tihanov
