Metadata Librarian (Lane Medical Library, School of Medicine, Stanford University)

The Metadata Librarian focuses on the creation and maintenance of metadata representing Lane’s digital, physical, and virtual collections of resources (ca. 350K records).  This position provides metadata management expertise and procedural/workflow stability while monitoring external developments and changing needs to assess and anticipate needed changes and enhancements.  While cognizant of established practice and the necessity of maintaining data coherence, s/he investigates and applies new technologies and approaches to support novel applications in the broader context of Lane’s digital and programmatic initiatives.

This is an 80% FTE position.

Information Specialist / Librarian

Summary

 

The Information Specialist/Librarian will have responsibility for assisting the Manager of Research Services in researching, developing, refining, implementing and providing product expertise and training for the research capabilities of the firm.  The Information Specialist/Librarian will assist in developing, maintaining and improving the electronic resources; including selection, cataloging, database creation and maintenance, and licensing and the physical collection; including ordering, cataloging, routing and shelving of print resources. 

 

Requirements

 

The Information Specialist/Librarian will meet the following qualifications:

 

1.    Degree in Library Science, Information Systems or Business preferred. 

 

2.    Law firm or professional services experience preferred.

 

3.    3 to 5 years of library or electronic product experience, preferably in a legal, corporate or business library.

 

4.    Strong knowledge of the following applications: Lexis, Westlaw, atVantage, Courtlink, Court Express, RIA Checkpoint, CCH Intelliconnect, BNA online platforms, Law360, Redwood Analytics, Hoovers, other legal, business and financial databases.

 

5.    Strong knowledge of relevant office and library productivity applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Inmagic Content Server and Sharepoint.

 

6.    Experience reviewing electronic research products and licensing, negotiating contracts and facilitating good vendor relations including attorney and staff training events.

 

7.    Strong organizational skills.  Strong written and oral communications skills and must be able to convey her or his ideas in a manner that is convincing to others.

 

8.    Strong interpersonal skills that allow the ability to work with a variety of attorneys and administrative staff, and the professional presence and demeanor to represent the firm in its research services functions to the attorneys, staff and administrative departments.

 

9.    Must be a team player and possess the ability to partner effectively with other administrative areas in order to accomplish the firm’s goals.

 

10. Web design and content management experience desired.

 

11. Strong work ethic and flexibility to meet the demands of the position; this includes working with attorneys and staff in the firm’s various offices on both the day and evening shifts.  This job requires the successful candidate to be available to meet crises on a 7/24 basis, and to be accessible even when on seminars or vacation.

 

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

The Information Specialist/Librarian will have the following responsibilities:

 

  1. Serve as subject matter expert for firm’s electronic and print research resources and serve as advisor on available and future research products and services.

 

  1. Maintain relationships with appropriate legal, business and marketing technology vendors to gain an understanding of the services and products available to the firm and to achieve optimum pricing.

 

  1. Provide ready reference and in-depth research product services, both legal and non-legal, to all practice and administrative areas of the firm.

 

  1. Work with research analysts to provide legal and competitive intelligence research including company profiles, case and docket research, and other research activities as needed.

 

  1. Contribute to the analysis, development of and adherence to the annual research services budget for electronic and print resource spend including the understanding of optimal cost recovery scenarios.

 

  1. Participate in knowledge management activities including development of internal work product and records management databases.

 

  1. Contribute to and maintain the firm’s Research Services Intranet content.

 

  1. Participate in daily library updating, maintenance, accounting and cataloging.

 

  1. Actively market library services within the firm.

 

  1. Develop and conduct research training.

 

  1. Attend seminars, association meetings and such related events that she or he is knowledgeable of the development of legal services technologies available to the law firm, and understands the state of the art legal technology necessary to maintain the firm’s competitive edge in this area.

 

  1. Undertake other duties as requested by the firm’s Manager of Research Services.
