TITLE:  Reference & Instruction Librarian/First Year Experience Coordinator 

 

 

LOCATION:  Cascadia Community College and University of Washington Bothell
Campus Library

                                                

 

The University of Washington Libraries seeks a creative and energetic
librarian to participate in a collaborative team at the University of
Washington Bothell and Cascadia Community College Campus Library.  The
successful candidate will be committed to providing a range of services at a
growing institution, including, but not limited to, instruction and
reference services.  

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

Reports to Head of Reference Services and serves under the general direction
of the Head of Reference Services and the Head of Instruction Services,
provides reference service and information literacy instruction to the
students, faculty and staff of Cascadia Community College and the University
of Washington Bothell.  This individual will partner with colleagues within
the Library and the campus to integrate information literacy learning
objectives into the curricula of both institutions. The successful candidate
will join a team of librarians, faculty and academic support staff committed
to innovation in teaching and learning.  

 

The Reference & Instruction Librarian will serve as a liaison to
undergraduate and graduate faculty and students in subject areas within the
humanities, social sciences, and/or sciences, to be determined based on
experience and current needs of the unit.

 

General responsibilities include cultivating and sustaining collaborative
relationships with faculty, students and staff in support of campus teaching
and learning.  Given the sustained growth and interdisciplinary nature of
the curricula at both institutions, this requires active and ongoing
collaboration among librarians across all subjects and levels.  Some evening
and weekend reference and instruction work will be required.

 

Teaching: Will partner with colleagues within the Library and campus to
develop and deliver in person and online instruction that integrates
information literacy into the curricula of both institutions. With a focus
on lower division courses and students, this position will partner with
faculty and librarians in further developing and coordinating the
information literacy instruction curriculum for UW Bothell's first year
sequence of required core courses and research writing courses, and will
participate in integrating information literacy instruction into Cascadia's
required College Strategies and research and writing courses. 

 

Collection Development: Will work closely with faculty and librarians within
their liaison areas to develop print and electronic curriculum-focused
collections, whose development is informed by the larger research
collections across the UW Libraries and regional consortia.  

 

Reference: Responsibilities include providing reference services in the
Library's Information Commons and online through the UW Libraries' email and
chat reference services. 

 

Professional Development and Service: The successful candidate will be
expected to play an active role in planning for the continued expansion of
UW Bothell and Cascadia, and to take responsibility for his/her professional
development in pursuit of promotion and continuing appointment.

 

CAMPUS AND LIBRARY:

 

The University of Washington Libraries serves the students, faculty and
staff of Cascadia Community College and the University of Washington Bothell
at their collocated campus in Bothell, located 18 miles north of downtown
Seattle. Cascadia's degrees include an Associate in Integrated Studies
(AIS), an Associate in Science (AS) and an Associate in Applied Science

Technologies), the Quantitative Skills Center, Teaching and Learning Center,

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

1. Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree.

2. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

 

Preferred:

1. Experience or demonstrated knowledge in the provision of instruction
services in a community college or university setting.  Familiarity with
information literacy and instructional technology concepts, trends,
pedagogies, and assessment.

2. Experience or demonstrated knowledge in the provision of instruction
services at the lower division including programs serving first generation
and/or underrepresented students.  

3. Experience or demonstrated knowledge of current and emerging
instructional technologies and online learning pedagogies in support of
hybrid or distance instruction.

4. Experience or demonstrated knowledge in the provision of reference
services to community college or university students.  Strong user centered
public service philosophy.

5. Applicants with knowledge of or experience with interdisciplinary studies
are encouraged to apply.  Preference will be given to candidates who have an
interest in gaining experience and developing knowledge in a variety of
disciplines.

6. Experience or demonstrated knowledge in working with students from
diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities who possess a wide range of
educational goals.  

7. Ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility,
creativity, collaboration and cooperation are essential.  Commitment to
continually seeking improvement in services, collections, and facilities.  

8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

 

ANTICIPATED START DATE:  July 1, 2010.

 

SALARY:  $42,600/year minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with
qualifications and background.

 

BENEFITS:  Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group,
and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.  Vacation is accrued at
the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working
days per year.  No state or local income tax.
