Fruit Tree Grafting Workshop
When: Saturday, May 1, 2010
Time: 10:00 am
Location: Tennessee State University Agricultural Research and Education Center
3101 River Road, Ashland City
Sponsored by:
Cheatham County Master Gardener Association, TSU AREC, and UT/TSU Cheatham County Extension
What is Grafting?
Grafting is a method of producing a tree whose fruit will be identical to its parents. The seed from a Haralson apple will produce an apple tree, but it will not produce a Haralson apple tree. Likewise, the seed from a Honeygold apple will not produce a Honeygold apple tree. In other words, fruit trees cannot be reproduced “true” to the original cultivar from seed. They can only be reproduced by grafting. Grafting describes any of a number of techniques in which a section of a stem with leaf buds is inserted into the stock of a tree.
Join us at our grafting workshop and create your own apple, pear, peach or plum tree. This is a hands-on workshop. The cost to attend is $12 per person. Two rootstocks will be provided along with supplies needed to complete each graft. Scion wood (branch of fruit tree to be grafted onto root stock) will be available at workshop, but you are welcome to bring your own. Also bring a very sharp knife to cut the scion and rootstock—knives are not provided at workshop.
For more information, or to reserve your spot at this workshop, contact Kaye Avrit at the Cheatham County Extension Office at 615-792-4420. The deadline for reservations is April 15.
