Parents Association Member Benefit Spotlight

Exclusive Scholarship Program

One of the benefits of your Parents Association membership is the opportunity for your student to apply for Parents Association Scholarships. Open exclusively to students of Parents Association members, the Parents Association Scholarship Program is funded directly through contributions to the Parents & Families Fund. The Parents Association annually awards scholarships in the areas of International Study/Intern Abroad, Academics, Leadership, and Service. The Academic, Leadership, and Service scholarships application period begins tomorrow, Thursday, April 1; online applications must be submitted, and a copy of your student's academic history/transcript must be received in the Parents Association office by 4:30 PM on Friday, April 23, 2010. Important Information for Students

Important Registration Deadlines Approaching

Monday, April 5, is the last day for students to drop a second session course with a grade of "W". A "W" will reflect a withdrawal of a course on a student's official academic transcript, but will not affect a student's GPA.

Tuesday, April 6, is the last day for students to drop a full term course with a grade of "WP/WF". Click here for more information on withdrawing from a course, as well as a complete explanation of possible course grades and marks.

Making Sense of a Major: Answers for Upperclassmen

Career Strategies for the Arts & Sciences is a course targeted primarily to juniors and 1st semester seniors interested in answering the "What are you going to do with that major?" question and identifying the necessary steps and tools to make it a reality. The goal of this course is to equip students in the College of Arts & Sciences with the knowledge and tools to identify what they WANT to do with their major and to take the appropriate action steps leading towards lifelong career success. Some of the topics include: identifying and evaluating possible career paths, communicating the value of a major and skill sets to employers through resumes/cover letters, interviews, networking and salary negation, planning and applying for graduate school, and transitioning into the professional world.

The course is a one-credit, satisfactory/no credit course that meets on Wednesdays in Dunford Hall, Room 100 from 1:25-2:15 PM. Students can sign up through Circle Park Online. Click here for more information.

Student Disciplinary Board Applications

The Office of Student Judicial Affairs is accepting applications for the Student Disciplinary Board. Board members hear allegations of student misconduct, determine responsibility for conduct violations, and determine appropriate sanctions for violations. Students interested in serving on the board must have sophomore standing (31 earned credit hours) and cannot be on disciplinary probation at the beginning of the fall 2010 semester. Additionally, the grade requirements are a minimum 2.0 GPA for undergraduate and law students and a minimum 3.0 GPA for graduate students. TeamVOLS Leadership Board Applications

TeamVOLS, the student organization on campus founded to provide Volunteer Outreach for Leadership and Service, is now accepting applications for its 2010-2011 Leadership Board. Comprised of 37 students who plan and implement weekly service opportunities as well as major campus events, the leadership board is a great way for your student to connect with other UT students and to the city of Knoxville and the social issues that are affecting the community. Women's Leadership Program Leadership Workshop Series

The Office of Student Orientation and Leadership Development is excited to continue the "Women at Work" Leadership Workshop Series as part of the Women's Leadership Program. Free and open to all students and staff, these workshops will highlight various topics surrounding women and leadership in the work setting. The next workshop is entitled What I Wish I Knew, and will consist of a panel of UT alumnae sharing their experiences transitioning from UT to their first job. This workshop will take place on Tuesday, April 6, at 4:00 PM in the Black Cultural Center multipurpose room. Click here for more information.

Student Environmental Project Contest

The Student Environmental Initiatives Committee is seeking student proposals for campus-based environmental stewardship projects to be funded through the Student Facilities Fee. The committee will award funds to implement the best education/outreach proposal, and to implement the best technical proposal that will conserve resources, improve the efficiency of campus operation, or generate renewable energy on campus. Proposals are welcome from any UT Knoxville student or student group and must be submitted by Monday, April 12. Click here for more information and to submit a proposal.

School of Music Concerts

There are several upcoming concerts being presented by the School of Music. The Men's and Women's Chorales will present their spring concert on Tuesday, April 6 at 8:00 PM in the James R. Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building. The UT Jazz Band will present its ensemble concert on Wednesday, April 7, at 8:00 PM in the Music Hall located in the Music Building. The Chamber Singers and Concert Choir will present their spring concert with the UT Chamber Orchestra on Thursday, April 8, at 8:00 PM in the James R. Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building. Poverty, Energy, and the Environment Mini-Summit

Poverty, Energy, and the Environment is the theme of the final mini-summit looking at various aspects of poverty being held this semester. Four events are planned as part of the Poverty, Energy and the Environment mini-summit, which kicks off on Wednesday, April 7 in the Hodges Library Auditorium. The mini-summit is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Ready for the World, the Global Studies Interdisciplinary Program, UT Libraries and the Departments of Philosophy, Anthropology and Agricultural Economics.
