Thank you, --Yan Ma ---------------------------------------------- The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Rhode Island is pleased to announce its Global Education for Librarians and Information Professionals Program. GSLIS will offer a new course, LSC590 Chinese Information Services, taught by Professor Yan Ma and other professors at Peking University and Zhejiang University in the summer of 2010. The dates are: August 17 to August 27, 2010. The course will provide students and professionals with an opportunity to travel to China to study the history of Chinese librarianship and libraries and information services from ancient to contemporary times. Participants will learn about different types of libraries and librarianship in China, specifically, the role of the traditional, academic, public, special and school libraries in China. Students will have an opportunity to visit the National Library of China, Peking University Library, Shanghai Library, Hangzhou Library, rural library, famous Tianyige Library in Ningbo, loyal and temple libraries, children's libraries and learn the U.S.-China Million Book Digital Library Project, which is instituted at Zhejiang University. Students will participate, with Professor Ma, in attending, as she presents at, the 5th Shanghai (Hangzhou) International Library Forum from August 24~27 in Shanghai and Hangzhou. A tour of the World Expo in Shanghai will be included to end the course in Shanghai. This is a 3-credit course from GSLIS. Participants are asked to attend all class sessions and library tours in China and complete a research paper after the Seminar ends. A non-credit option is also available; participants will attend all class sessions and library tours without the requirement of the research paper. Scholarships: There is a total of $10,000 from the Confucius Institute for scholarships. Each scholarship is $1000. The scholarship forms will be available at this site.
