Visit more than 300 sites at Rutgers' campuses in Newark, New Brunswick, and Camden in just one day. It is possible -- but not by conventional methods.
Through the whereRU project
run by Assistant Professor of Library and Information Science Anselm Spoerri and students in the
Information Technology and Informatics undergraduate major, anyone in
the world can take visual tours of Rutgers. They can see the new athletic fitness complex; the impressive glass mural gateway to the Camden Campus; the Center for Law and Justice at Rutgers-Newark, and much more.
"whereRU
was founded in part by the undergraduate admissions office, because
they were excited about what it makes possible for prospective students
to experience Rutgers in a virtual way," Spoerri said. (Watch YouTube Video from Rutgers Today on whereRU.)
Spoerri said that not only can prospective students get to know Rutgers, but students, faculty, and staff on Rutgers' three geographically disparate campuses can familiarize themselves with their colleagues locales without having to take a long train or car ride. Additionally, whereRU has important implications for conducting research, Spoerri said.
whereRU uses Gigapan and Photosynth, two programs that allow ultra-high-resolution images to be stitched together. Gigapan allows viewers to zoom in to capture detail up close; Photosynth lets users view images from many angles to get a virtual three-dimensional sense of space through photographs.
