The iSchool at Drexel, College of Information Science and Technology, will host the lecture "Information Transfer and Knowledge Acquisition through Virtual Reality: Two Case Studies" by Dr. Jamshid Beheshti, McGill University on Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. in room 014, Rush Building (30 N. 33rd Street), Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. The presentation discusses the design and development of virtual environments for children to assist them in information transfer and knowledge acquisition. Two environments are designed and constructed using desk-top virtual reality tools. The first environment consists of a virtual reality library, VRLibrary, based on the metaphor of a physical library with rooms, bookcases and books. Young users, just as in a physical library, can walk around the VRlibrary, move among the bookcases, scan the titles of books that are arranged on the bookshelves, select individual books, and open them. The second environment, ENVI, comprises a representation of a real village, St. Hilaire in Quebec in the late nineteenth century, in which a number of "scenes", including a kitchen, a dance, and a farmyard, can be explored interactively by children.
