The Digital Media Librarian is responsible for the effective acquisition, archival processing, retrieval, and delivery of corporate audio-visual media assets. The Librarian will also act as a reference source to satisfy internal and external requests for information and answers relating to archival assets while complying with all legal, intellectual property, and preservation concerns. Additionally, this person participates on departmental and cross-functional teams to develop corporate procedures and ensure the most efficient handling and preservation of archival assets.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned.
Library / Media Services
o Develop, document, and educate clientele on standards and procedures for the effective acquisition, cataloguing, preservation, retrieval, and delivery of digital media assets.
o Physically ingest new assets while capturing all pertinent metadata to facilitate efficient search for related
information, and physically retrieve and deliver requested assets.
o Maintains and continually improves asset metadata information on archived assets and new arrivals.

Customer Service
o Efficiently satisfies internal and external requests for information or access to assets, while complying with all legal, intellectual property, and preservation concerns.

Other Duties
o Perform other departmental responsibilities as needed to ensure client satisfaction.
o Anticipates future needs of the position, develop strategies, and present them to management.
o Suggest appropriate additions/deletions to job description, information systems, and workflow.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education and/or Experience
o Degree in library studies, museum studies, or position relevant degree.
o Two or three years experience managing assets in a corporate, library, museum, or related environment.
o Equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
o Demonstrable knowledge of the practice and science of classification in a digital media environment.
o Demonstrable knowledge of audio-visual, photographic, and print media formats and systems.

Position Title: Archive Intern

The Democracy Now! Archive is looking for interns for the winter/spring 2010 semester. The internship program is structured for students and individuals interested in gaining hands on experience in the field of moving picture archiving and preservation. Interns build skills and become familiar with practical application of those skills in the workplace. The position requires a ten week commitment and approximately fifteen hours per week. Scheduling is flexible.
Composed of over 70,000 media items, the archive contains books, photographs, artifacts and audiovisual materials such as field recordings, oral histories, interviews, and news footage from the 1980s to today. An integral part of daily operations and production of Democracy Now!, the archive is also used as a resource by researchers, filmmakers, artists and educators.
Interns are responsible for cataloging incoming video created by Democracy Now! producers and other independent media and news organizations. Interns also process collections and library books, re-house archival material, digitize audiotape, and are encouraged to work on special projects of their choice. This is an excellent opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in media archives in a busy newsroom environment. Knowledge of current events is helpful.

Montana Digital Newspaper Project - Project Technician
The Montana Historical Society seeks a Project Technician for a National Digital Newspaper Project (www.loc.gov/ndnp) grant ending June 30, 2011. This is a 30 hour per week, temporary position.
The position is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to the Montana Historical Society to begin digitization of Montana’s microfilmed newspapers. The Montana Newspaper Digitization Project, a part of the National Digital Newspaper Program developed by NEH and the Library of Congress, will digitize 50,000 Montana newspaper pages between the years of 1860 and 1922 during the two-year grant period. Newspapers digitized as part of the grant award will be included in the Library of Congress' Chronicling America database at www.loc.gov/chroniclingamerica.
The Project Technician is responsible for performing quality control and assisting the Project Coordinator with the newspaper digitization project. Essential duties and responsibilities include:

Perform quality assurance on images, metadata, OCR and other deliverables for a newspaper digitization project.
Create documentation for newspaper digitization project.
Prepare materials for the project's advisory board.
Assist with tracking, presenting, and reporting of microfilm selection data and digital deliverables fulfillment.
Assist with preparation of microfilm for newspaper digitization project.
Evaluation of microfilm
Creation of metadata
Other duties as assigned.

The candidate should have strong communication skills, organizational ability and willingness to embrace innovation and change. Experience with digitization projects and/or microfilm to digital conversion projects; microfilming best practices; metadata standards; and principles and standards of digitization are required.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in library or information science or a related discipline or equivalent related experience, plus one to three years experience with digitization projects.

Note: Up to 10 additional hours per week may be available through June 30, 2010, to provide technical support to institutions participating in the Montana Memory Project (www.mtmemory.org). Up to 10 additional hours per week may also be available from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011.

Assistant Archivist

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is currently considering applicants for the position of Assistant Archivist. The Assistant Archivist reports to the Archivist and is responsible for assisting in the archival activities of the Library and Archives, including appraisal, arrangement, description, preservation, reference, and digitization. He/she assists the Archivist with determining departmental needs and advocates for issues relating to or affecting the archival collections; works with the Archivist to set priorities for collection processing and for digitization; participates in the implementation of EAD for encoded finding aids; identifies and refers items as necessary for conservation treatment; submits regular reports on archival processing; and assists with reference and reproduction requests. In the absence of the Archivist, he/she supervises the activities of certain student employees, interns, and volunteers.

Required:
Master's degree in library science, archival studies, or related field; minimum of two years processing archival materials in an academic or research library setting; background in archival appraisal, arrangement, and description; experience working with various physical formats, including paper, sound recordings, video materials, and photographs; working knowledge of current metadata and descriptive standards, including DACS, EAD, and MARC 21.

Preferred:
Additional degree in music or related discipline; knowledge of rock and roll and related popular music genres; conservation experience; supervisory experience.

The Peabody Essex Museum / Phillips Library of Salem, Massachustts is accepting applications for the Frances E. Malamy Research Fellowship. The endowed fellowship offers to an individual scholar a $5000 grant to perform independent scholarly research that requires the use of archival materials held at the Phillips Library and/ or archiving activities under the direction of the Phillips Library staff. The activities may result in the publication of the Fellow's findings in book or article form or in the form of a finding aid that will help other scholars doing research in the collection(s) the Fellow has worked on.

Fellowships are open to advanced scholars, graduate students, independent scholars, and library and museum professionals. The Fellow will submit to the Phillips Library and to the Malamy family a copy of any and all publications emanating from the Fellow's work. The Fellow will acknowledge the Frances E. Malamy Research Fund in all publications. Work must be completed by the end of the calendar year.

Overview:

Under minimal supervision, this position performs a variety of tasks
related to provision of reference services and the library functions
supporting it. These duties may include document and book acquisition,
cataloging, bibliographic searches, development and maintenance of
information sources and contacts, collection development, posting and
maintaining information on an intranet or the Internet, and evaluating
publications or products for inclusion in the collection. The incumbent
may be assigned to perform any one or more of these specific functions.



Responsibilities:

* Prepares technical source material summaries and abstracts of
a moderately complex nature. Performs literature searches.

* Participates in the development and maintenance of information
sources and contacts, including liaisons with professional
organizations, government information collecting and disseminating
operations, and private data services.

* Assists in documenting all reference transactions in the
library usage database.

Qualifications:

services environment, preferably one specializing in or supporting
scientific and technical or military disciplines.

* Experience with database platforms and management, and data
management environments.

* Experience with content-database integration and a range of
database platforms.

* Experience using online databases common to library reference
work and information provision.

* Knowledge of content and Web content management technologies,
protocols, and development tools.

* Direct experience integrating knowledge with portals/intranets
and databases.

* Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of
employees.

* Ability to obtain and maintain necessary security clearance.
