January 25, 2010

Dear High School Counselor:
The Tommy T. Martin Chair of Insurance at Middle Tennessee State University is again sponsoring a tuition and expense-free workshop for high school guidance counselors in Tennessee on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 7, 8, and 9, 2010. You and several other counselors are invited to attend. The workshop is funded by the Insurance Education Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to covering costs, a stipend of $250 will be paid to each participant.
We believe that the workshop is needed in Tennessee because many high school teachers and counselors are not exposed to the opportunities available in the Insurance industry. You may not be aware of the size and complexity of the insurance business, the growing need for insurance professionals, the career options therein, or the relatively high incomes of insurance professionals. The kind of information that you need to guide students into insurance is not readily available to you, and this workshop will give you a condensed and comprehensive overview of the industry.
While there may be several avenues available to inform counselors like yourself about the insurance industry, there are probably none as effective as person-to-person conversations or small group settings. That is why this workshop is the ideal vehicle to help you and other high school counselors learn about this industry. The relatively small number of participants at the workshop will enable instructors, discussion leaders, and panelists to get to know you and other participants on a personal level and to answer questions you have. Participants will attend lectures, hear panel discussions, and make a field trip to the regional office of State Farm Insurance Company while you are here. Most of the events will take place on the MTSU campus and most meals will be served in a campus cafeteria.
Participants from more distant points are invited to arrive Sunday, June 6, spend the night in Murfreesboro, and register on Monday at 10:00AM for the conference. Those living closer may drive in on Monday morning. The workshop will end on Wednesday, June 9, when there will be a graduation dinner at a local restaurant. Your travel mileage will be reimbursed and parking near the Business/Aerospace building will be arranged. Every effort will be made to accommodate your needs and to make your stay at MTSU a very pleasant, informative, and educational experience.
You are invited to either commute to and from your home to MTSU each day, if you live nearby, or to stay in Murfreesboro if you live further away. If you choose to spend nights in Murfreesboro, we suggest that you stay at a local motel where we will reserve a block of rooms for your convenience. We are negotiating prices at this time and will advise of the location when you make your workshop commitment.
The primary instructors for the workshop will be Dr. Emily N. Zietz and myself. We both teach insurance courses at MTSU and have over 50 years of teaching experience between us. We have good teaching evaluations, good research records, and experience in conducting seminars and institutes with adult audiences. Other lecturers, discussion leaders, and panelists, from both the academic and business arenas, will also be used.
I hope that you will consider attending the workshop. It is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the business of Insurance in a stress-free environment at no cost and with a $250 bonus thrown in. Please respond early, if you are interested, since we are able to accommodate and have funding available for only 25 participants. An itinerary for the workshop is attached.
You may indicate your interest in attending by contacting me at the address or phone number below. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kenneth Hollman
