Attention COE Seniors: Senior Gift 2010

Dr. Christopher CherrySenior Gift 2010 is especially important, as your gift will benefit your fellow engineers via the College Fund for Engineering. The College Fund for Engineering has recently served as a crucial resource for college-wide programming such as Engage, expanded advising services, and the Pre-Collegiate Scholars Program as well as for purchasing specialized equipment and facility renovations.

In addition, a Senior Gift in support of the College Fund for Engineering will allow the college to seize future opportunities and jump-start future initiatives. Please consider joining your classmates in support of Senior Gift 2010. Your Senior Gift will not only serve the immediate needs of engineering students, but it will set a wonderful example for other seniors, graduate students, underclassmen and future engineering students.

Soda Shop 2010

LogosStudents enjoyed free popcorn, soda and candy Feb. 3 in the University Center Ballroom during the Office of Professional Practice “Soda Shop.” This casual event offers information about the engineering co-op/internship program, how students can get involved, and why they should consider participating.

Six students who answered trivia questions correctly received a prize that included donations from partnering employers Eastman Chemical, Siemens Medical – CTI, and local restaurants Penn Station, Buffalo Wild Wings, Mellow Mushroom and Zaxby’s.

Guest speaker Clay Griffin, president of Rembco Geotechnical Contractors Inc., gave his perspective on the value of getting work experience while still in school, followed by student speaker Jack Smodic who spoke on the same topic but from a student’s perspective. Attendees were also introduced to the new director of Professional Practice, Todd Reeves, who spoke about his background and enthusiasm for his new role with the office.

The event wrapped up with Professional Practice student ambassadors Jacob Buchkovich, LaShawnda Coburn and Michael Cain giving mock interviews that showed the audience how to act and dress – and how not to act and dress – during interviews with employers.

Office of Professional Practice Student Feature

Bryce WalkerBryce Walker is a civil and environmental engineering major who accepted a co-op position with Messer Construction. He is working his first rotation this semester.

“I'm currently co-oping with Messer Construction,” Walker said. “We are working on the UT Dairy Farm Relocation project, building some 12 or 15 buildings on the site– anything from residential houses for farm employees to a full-scale working dairy milking parlor and research facility."

“Messer is dedicated to making sure their co-ops have every opportunity to advance themselves in the field. When I arrived on site, the project engineer I work with asked me to make a list of skills I would like to develop throughout my co-op. Since then, they have gone through great lengths to make sure that I get practice in the areas I listed."

“Since I have been here, I have become very competent at layout. We use state-of-the-art equipment to layout building sites according to the plans. I participate in owner-architect-contractor meetings. Also, I help coordinate Messer employees as well as subcontractors on site."

“I would recommend the co-op experience to everyone. There is only one way to be sure you will enjoy the profession you are going into, and that is to get real-world experience. A co-op allows you to do so, while making you more valuable in the future job market and helping you build business skills and relationships. Co-oping is the only way to go.”
