Faculty News and Announcements

Dr. Baoshan Huang Dr. Baoshan Huang, an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was named as the Chairman of the Bituminous Materials Committee (BMC) of the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE) for the term 2010 – 2012. The BMC is a technical committee funded by the ASCE Construction Institute (CI). As a technical leading organization, the committee has been actively involved in developing new technology and in promoting technology transfer related to asphalt paving materials as well as other materials of bituminous nature.

 

Attention COE Seniors: Senior Gift 2010

Dr. Christopher CherrySenior Gift 2010 is especially important, as your gift will benefit your fellow engineers via the College Fund for Engineering. The College Fund for Engineering has recently served as a crucial resource for college-wide programming such as Engage, expanded advising services, and the Pre-Collegiate Scholars Program as well as for purchasing specialized equipment and facility renovations.

In addition, a Senior Gift in support of the College Fund for Engineering will allow the college to seize future opportunities and jump-start future initiatives. Please consider joining your classmates in support of Senior Gift 2010. Your Senior Gift will not only serve the immediate needs of engineering students, but it will set a wonderful example for other seniors, graduate students, underclassmen and future engineering students.

Reliability and Maintainability Conference:
Free for UT faculty and full-time students!

MARCON 2010, the Reliability and Maintainability Conference sponsored by the COE’s own Reliability & Maintainability Center (RMC), is being held February 15-18, 2010 at the Knoxville Marriott. The conference has three outstanding keynote speakers, some 30 presenters, an exhibit area and five focused workshops. The keynoters are:

Dr. Michael Pecht of the University of Maryland, speaking on "What is Happening with Electronic Product Reliability."

Mr. Hugh Blackwood of Alcoa, speaking on "Identifying & Sharing Global Best Practices."

Mr. Brad Berkson of Joshua Capital, LLC. (formerly Program Director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and Undersecretary of Defense for Logistics and Material Readiness) speaking on "Logistics Effectiveness in an Environment of Declining Defense Budgets."

UT faculty and full time students are may attend the keynote addresses and conference presentations and tour the Exhibit Area free, but meals and workshops are only offered for registered attendees. Complete conference information can be found at [log in to unmask].

Office of Professional Practice spring event dates have been set. Students are encouraged to mark their calendars now so they don’t miss out on these opportunities!

Resume Workshops

Feb. 10: 5:00 p.m. 216 Perkins

Feb. 24: 5:00 p.m. 216 Perkins

Students attending will learn how to format their resume specifically for co-op and internship employers. Give yourself an edge on the competition by catering to co-op and internship employers so your resume will stand out at the Engineering Fair. Students are encouraged to bring their resume to have it reviewed and receive personalized recommendations. Resume templates will be available at the workshops, or may be obtained anytime by sending an email request to [log in to unmask]

Interview Schedule Deadline

Feb. 19: Last day to schedule interviews before the fair

February 19 is the last day for students to schedule interviews before the engineering fair. Interviews are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis; those wishing to interview are encouraged to make an appointment with their co-op / internship advisor well in advance (as early as mid-January) to maximize their opportunities.

March 1: 5:00 27 Alumni Memorial Building

Learn what employers want to see and hear during an interview, and brush up on interviewing skills before attending the Engineering Fair.

Spring Engineering Fair

March 4:4 to 7 p.m. UC Ballroom

Engineering students are invited to attend dressed for success to discuss opportunities with business partners from corporate America. All engineering students are encouraged to attend for networking opportunities and potential interviews from employers who are completing their own interview schedules.

March 5: Neyland Stadium East Skyboxes

Engineering Fair interviews will be held in the Neyland Stadium East Skyboxes; students with interviews should enter at Gate 26, next to Estabrook Hall.

Office of Professional Practice Student Feature

Chad SuttonChad Sutton is an aerospace engineering major who accepted a co-op position with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

During his fall 2009 rotation, Chad said “I am a second term co-op with NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. My primary field of study is aerospace engineering, primarily applied to liquid propulsion systems.

“I am currently working in the Combustion Devices Design & Development group, where our primary task is just that – the design and development of combustion devices. Basically, the way it works is that we are given a set of requirements, which we then come up with a design for, model, fabricate and test our hardware. For anyone who loves smoke and fire, it doesn't get any better than this!

“The co-op program has been the best decision I could have made toward a successful career. I have made very high-up contacts, proven myself in the workforce, and have seen the practical application side of what I have learned in books. I highly recommend this for all engineering students!”

The deadline for students to apply is Feb. 15, 2010 for this coming summer 2010. Students can also find out more at the UT Study Abroad web site.
