Dr. Takeshi Egami has just received 2010 J.D. Hanawalt Award from the International Union of Crystallography, with S. J. L. Billinge. The Hanawalt Award is awarded for excellence for important contributions to the field of x-ray powder diffraction.
Award Winners
The UT College of Engineering Office of Engineering Communications received a Bronze Citation of Excellence at the 2010 Addy Awards ceremony last Saturday night. The award was for the 2009 College of Engineering Annual Report. The creative team for the project included Kim Cowart, Director of Engineering Communications; Mitchell Williamson, Graphic Designer; and Rip Noel of Noel Studios, photographer. The Addy Awards are sponsored by the American Advertising Federation Knoxville Chapter and are held annually to recognize outstanding achievement in marketing, communications and advertising.
Sameer Ranjan Paital, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, working under Professor Narendra B. Dahotre, received the first place in the graduate division poster contest at the recently concluded The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) annual meeting, held February 14-18, 2010 in Seattle. His poster, titled “Wetting and Corollary Biocompatibility of Laser Synthetic Surface Micro Textures for Bone Tissue Engineering,” was chosen as the best one by the organizers of the Biological Materials Science Symposium at the 2010 TMS Annual meeting. A part of the research was performed in collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The award includes $500 in prize money, a 1st place Ribbon and a certificate from the organizers, along with 1 year’s free registration to attend TMS upcoming meetings.
Outreach News
Winners of the College of Engineering Study Abroad fellowships have been announced! Laura Poland, sophomore in Materials Science, has been awarded a research internship in Germany for the summer. Carrie Lloyd, junior in Chemical Engineering, and Ethan Cansler, freshman in Aerospace Engineering, are each doing general education studies this summer at Cambridge University, England. Dr. Randall has a background in materials science and his Ph.D. focused on development of an instrument that combines nanoindentation with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). He has been responsible for the CSM Instruments US office in Boston since 2002 and continues to develop new and novel applications in the surface characterization field. He is also chairman of ASTM G02 committee, responsible for developing and improving Tribology test standards.

UT Space Institute News
John Muratore, professor in Aviation Systems at the University of Tennessee Space Institute, was a part of a feature article in the Air & Space Smithsonian Magazine for March 2010.
Muratore, a former NASA employee, was the program manager for the X-38-V132 project, based at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas during the period 1998-2002. Flight Test Engineer for the X-38 was future astronaut, Michael E. Fossum. Created as an alternative and emergency means of bringing up to seven International Space station (ISS) crewmembers back to earth, the X-38 was designed to fit in the payload bay of the shuttle.
The X-38 would have served as a lifeboat in the event the station had to be evacuated or it would have served as an ambulance in case someone was gravely injured on the station. The battery system would last approximately nine hours and be used for power and life support.
The CRV had a parafoil parachute that deployed in four stages to slow and stabilize the vehicle for a safer landing.
As a partner in the X-38 project, the European Space Agency was looking at modifying the shape of the CRV into a crew transfer vehicle to fly people up to and back from the space station.
The project was within eighteen months and $50 million of being launched into space on its first test flight when NASA cancelled the funding. The program had performed 8 atmospheric tests of the vehicle, dropping from the wing of a NASA’s B-52 at the Dryden Flight Research Center.
In October 2009, the X-38 V-132 Crew Recovery Vehicle (CRV) was sent to the Strategic Air and Space Museum in Ashland, Nebraska, on permanent loan. It was welcomed by a high school band, a mayor, and a lieutenant governor.
“Our plan was to derive a version to put on [the European launcher] Ariane 5 – that’s why we modified the shape. We’d have had an alternative access to the station,” said Muratore. “Sooner or later, we’re going to have to build another rescue vehicle…especially as space evolves more toward commercial operations, there’s going to be a need for rescue.”

The College Fund for Engineering has recently served as a crucial resource for college-wide programming such as Engage, expanded advising services, and the Pre-Collegiate Scholars Program as well as for purchasing specialized equipment and facility renovations.
In addition, a Senior Gift in support of the College Fund for Engineering will allow the college to seize future opportunities and jump-start future initiatives. Your Senior Gift will not only serve the immediate needs of engineering students, but it will set a wonderful example for other seniors, graduate students, underclassmen and future engineering students.

Engineering students are invited to attend dressed for success to discuss opportunities with business partners from corporate America. All engineering students are encouraged to attend for networking opportunities and potential interviews from employers who are completing their own interview schedules.

Office of Professional Practice Student Feature
Ryan DeLozier is a mechanical engineering major who spent the fall 2009 term on his first co-op rotation with BSH Home Appliances in Jacksboro, Tennessee.
“On my co-op assignment I have been doing all kinds of work in the design engineering lab. This first semester I am spending most of my time out in the lab and learning from the lab technicians about all of the tests that are necessary for ranges and cooktops, and also just gaining a general knowledge of the product. I have been doing some gas-flow rate analysis, implementing new prototype parts, testing oven doors and griddle components, etc.
“Oftentimes I will get specific parts from the plant and ship them to BSH associates worldwide – and let me tell you, shipping to a Turkish or German address is rather strange and has a lot of paperwork involved! I have been able to get to know my way around the manufacturing plant pretty well, and I have gained a lot of knowledge involving the ranges and cooktops, how they function, and how they are assembled. For instance, I have recently been working on a prototype glass retainer that one of the designers has made in order to reduce costs in the oven door assembly.
“While I have been building and testing all kinds of parts, I have also been able to attend many meetings and see how the engineering process works for my particular company, BSH. I have seen firsthand what goes into making small changes in the product design and the number of people involved in the process of producing a Thermador range.
“I have been able to assist the design staff on many of their projects, and I have also been able to share my ideas, a few of which have actually led to design changes that are now in effect in the product. It has been a wonderful experience thus far, and the work environment could not be better. My department is productive and at the same time offers a certain level of comfort that I think benefits everyone.”

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program
Summer 2010 & Fall 2010/Academic Year 2010-2011 Application Open – Deadline: April 6, 2010
The Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce the opening of the Fall 2010 online application with over 1,700 scholarships to be awarded. A limited number of summer awards will be available to students majoring in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) that meet the program's standard eligibility criteria listed below.

Congressional Internship Program
Upon the initiative of the Chancellor, the University of Tennessee is developing a Congressional Internship Program. This summer, the university is planning send five students to Washington, D.C. to intern with Tennessee legislators. In order to participate in the program, the student must:

Undergraduate Summer Research
All undergraduate students enrolled at the Knoxville campus are eligible to apply. Up to 75 internships at $2,000 each will be awarded to support students who will work on a research or creative project with a UT Knoxville faculty mentor for two months in the summer of 2010. TVA/UT Career Services Engineering Student Intern/Ambassador Program MUST SUBMIT RESUME BEFORE SPRING BREAK - MARCH 5th deadline!
The UT Office of Career Services and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) are partnering in a joint venture to employ a UT Engineering student for a TVA internship during Summer 2010 and a 10-hour per week position at UT Career Services during the academic year 2010-2011.
The person chosen for this position will receive a paid internship for the Summer of 2010, working directly for TVA. Additionally, the student will serve as an Ambassador for TVA during the Fall/Spring semesters 2010-2011.
The person chosen for the position will also work in the UT Office of Career Services (100 Dunford Hall) for 10 hours per week for 14 weeks for both Fall and Spring semesters 2010-2011. If possible, the chosen student will work for 1-2 paid hours per week during April 2010 for training purposes.
