Alumnus Named AREVA Engineer of the Year

Chris Plucker, a UTK grad, was named as an AREVA Engineer-of-the-Year
for 2010. He was one of seven so honored as part of Engineers Week.

“This year’s Engineers of the Year exemplify operational excellence
through safety, quality, delivery and performance,” said Mike
Rencheck, AREVA Inc. Chief Operating Officer. “Through their
contributions to the company and the community in which they live and
work, these individuals are making a difference.

Chris Plucker is a supervisor for Non-Destructive Examination
Services. He was the key designer for the successful Oconee Transfer
System. From design to fabrication and testing, Chris took the lead.
Taking the lead is something that seems to come naturally to Chris, as
in these successful projects.

Chris was also largely responsible for the TIP award received by TVA
for the Brown’s Ferry flange repair. The customer was very pleased
with the design efforts of both projects Chris lead for them, an
accomplishment to be proud of. What stands behind these
accomplishments is Chris’s consistent performance and high quality
work, as well as his leadership ‘outside the box.’”

An AREVA employee for 17 years, Chris has a bachelor’s degree in
mechanical engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Attention COE Seniors: Senior Gift 2010

Senior Gift 2010 is especially important, as your gift will benefit
your fellow engineers via the College Fund for Engineering. The
College Fund for Engineering has recently served as a crucial resource
for college-wide programming such as Engage, expanded advising
services, and the Pre-Collegiate Scholars Program as well as for
purchasing specialized equipment and facility renovations.

In addition, a Senior Gift in support of the College Fund for
Engineering will allow the college to seize future opportunities and
jump-start future initiatives. Please consider joining your classmates
in support of Senior Gift 2010. Your Senior Gift will not only serve
the immediate needs of engineering students, but it will set a
wonderful example for other seniors, graduate students, underclassmen
and future engineering students.

Please visit the Office of Engineering Development in 120 or 121
Perkins Hall in order to make a Senior Gift via check or credit card
or contact them via email at [log in to unmask] for more information.

Office of Professional Practice Student Feature

Philip Terry is a senior in aerospace engineering. He spent the spring
and fall 2009 semesters working on a co-op with Aerospace Testing
Alliance and wrote the following during his second rotation.

“I am currently on my second co-op term with Aerospace Testing
Alliance (ATA). ATA contracts with the Air Force to operate Arnold
Engineering Development Center (AEDC) at Arnold Air Force Base,
Tennessee. AEDC has 58 aerospace test facilities that range from
rocket and turbine engine test cells, ballistic ranges, arc heaters,
aerodynamic and propulsion wind tunnels, and space environmental
chambers.

“Throughout my time here I have worked in the Propulsion Wind Tunnel
facility with the Stores Integration group. The Stores Integration
group conducts wind tunnel testing that specifically deals with the
launch and jettison of stores (missiles, bombs, etc.) from aircraft.
These tests are done as a part of the development of new weapons and
aircraft systems to ensure that the store will release properly from
the aircraft, without endangering the pilot, and be able to carry out
its mission.

“I have been a part of several test projects in AEDC’s 16-foot
transonic wind tunnel. I was able to work closely with the project
engineers conducting the test by assisting them during test
operations. This experience has been very valuable, as I have been
able to observe and assist with the entire test process – starting
with the preparation and buildup, and concluding with analysis and
reporting after the test. I have gained a lot of specific technical
knowledge and skill in this type of wind tunnel testing.

“Besides the technical aspects of wind tunnel testing, a big part of
the project engineer’s job is dealing with administrative issues and
coordinating with other test team members to accomplish the goals of
the test. These types of skills are highly useful in any career field.

“It has been a great experience to see and be involved with such a
large effort that is crucial to the success of our military. My time
at ATA has been very enjoyable and I am grateful for the opportunity
to gain valuable engineering experience and develop skills that will
help in my professional career.”
