Important Information for Students

Study Abroad Fair

Encourage your student to learn about how to get started with the study abroad process by attending the Programs Abroad Study Abroad Fair TODAY, Wednesday, January 27 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the University Center Ballroom. Your student can find out about semester, academic year, summer, and mini-term programs, explore summer internship options, meet students who have studied abroad and international students from around the world, speak with UTK faculty leading summer and mini-term programs abroad, and get information on scholarships, financial aid, and money matters. Students will also have the chance to talk to representatives from UTK advising centers about studying abroad in their college. For more information, visit http://studyabroad.utk.edu/.

Parents Association Offers Student Scholarships

It's time for students to begin applying for the Parents Association International Scholarship. This scholarship provides financial assistance specifically to students of UT Parents Association members who seek to study, intern, or volunteer abroad. The application period for the scholarships is February 1 through February 25, 2010. Students must complete and submit the online application AND submit a transcript/academic history to the Parents Association Office at 412 Student Services Building no later than 4:30 PM on Thursday, February 25. Students can visit http://parents.utk.edu for more information and to access the online application. The Parents Association Academic, Leadership and Service Scholarship Applications will be available in April.

Career Services Internship Webinar

Career Services will sponsor the seminar "Internships from Accounting to Zoology: How to Find Your Dream Internship" on Thursday, January 28 from 1:00-2:00 PM in the University Center Shiloh Room. The presentation, featuring nationally known speaker Donald Asher, will cover topics such as when to start the internship search, internship tips for all years, how to get a post-degree internship, and internship resources. Women's Leadership Programs

The Office of Student Orientation & Leadership Development is offering young women at UT an exciting way to develop their leadership skills through the Women's Leadership Program. The cornerstone of the Women's Leadership Program is the Women's Mentoring Network which offers a set of activities designed to develop mentoring relationships between female students and faculty and staff. Participants will be paired with a female faculty or staff member for positive guidance and mentorship. Space is limited, so encourage your student to register early! 5th Annual Black Issues Conference

The 5th annual Black Issues Conference is open to all students and is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Carolyn P. Brown University. This year's theme is, "Black in America: How Far We Have Come...Yet, So Far to Go." The conference and lunch are free to all UT students, faculty, staff, and registered participants. Financial Aid Application Deadline

The priority deadline for filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2010-2011 academic year is Monday, March 1, 2010. Click here for more information about filing a FAFSA.

In-state students receiving the Tennessee Education Lottery HOPE Scholarship must file an updated FAFSA for the 2010-2011 academic year in order to continue to receive their HOPE Scholarship (in addition to maintaining the GPA and other requirements). Click here for more information on HOPE Scholarship retention requirements (including minimum Grade Point Average and number of hours completed).

Information for Parents

Parents Association Online Chat Scheduled

The Parents Association will be hosting an online chat for Parents AND students with the Programs Abroad Office to provide information about opportunities to study abroad. The online chat will take place Tuesday, February 2, 2010 from 6:00-7:30 PM. You (and your student) may access the chat from the News & Announcements section of the Undergraduate Admissions webpage at http://admissions.utk.edu. This chat will give you and your student a great opportunity to learn more about studying, traveling, or interning abroad.

Surprise Your Student with a Special Treat

Visit the Encourage Your Student portion of the Parents Resources section on the Parents Association website to order a special treat for your student. Student Alumni Associates will deliver a personalized cake or giant chocolate chip cookie to your student's residence hall for only $20. Messages include "Happy Birthday", "Thinking of You", "Love You", and "Congratulations". Orders must be received at least 10 days before your student's special occasion. Baker Center Series

The Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy has several exciting events and series coming up. "H2Oh!-The Future of Water" will begin Sunday, January 31. Beginning February 4, they will begin "Through the Pen and the Lens: Poverty and Culture in the South-1930's and 1980's." Click here for more information.

UT Science Forum

The UT Science Forum will take place at noon on Friday, January 29, in Thompson-Boling Arena Dining rooms C-D. The speaker will be Henry Fribourg, Professor Emeritus of Crop Ecology. Princeton Review Names UT a "Best Value College" for 2010

Now more than ever, parents and students want strong academics at an affordable price when it comes to choosing a college education. The University of Tennessee Knoxville has recently made the list of The Princeton Review's "Best Value Colleges for 2010", which ranks the university among the 50 best values in higher education in the country.

The Princeton Review ranks American colleges based on undergraduate academics, affordability, and financial aid for the "best value" list. The 50 public and 50 private colleges and universities were selected from among more than 650 public and private colleges and universities. Click here for more information.
