Troops: this message is broadcast via "Email the entire group" at the Communications page of the ME 452w website.  Those receiving it are confirmed enrolled in this course, excepting Campbell and Singleton, having met the 4 prerequisites or concurrently taking heat transfer.   The login to the website which enables accessing secure material is:  user name "troops" and password "FE4real"

Your first assignment is to go to the website Lab Experiments page, then touch the “Student Labs” hotword to access the class list.  Touch your email link and send a message to yourself to confirm that the link is correct.  After you have setup your public_html area for computer lab reporting, see below, similarly check that the link works by the appropriate touch.  Report any difficulties in a broadcast email to the entire class.

At times some students experience problems with RealPlayer not properly streaming the archived lectures.  Using Real11GOLD, others successfully streamed the videos with all features operating.  In select instances, a warning box comes up stating the video will not load.  Simply touch “OK” and it will appear!   To make sure this issue does not compromise your ability to “get on board,” each student receives a DVD set containing the entire lecture series, to be returned at the end of semester.  Those of you missing the first class may obtain the archived lecture DVD set by contacting Mr. Kao Chua in Perkins 320, directly adjacent to the CFD Laboratory.  ASAP send him an email at [log in to unmask] to set up a time for this exchange.

I use this Bellsouth email portal for all broadcast communications to the class.    DO NOT reply to it – always use [log in to unmask] for all course-related communications.   AJB

ME 452w lab report setup:

The course major inaugural step is to set up your OIT public_html area, then download the Lab Report Template zip file thereto and unzip it.  Your first lab report is due at class 3 via this modality.  Directions are detailed at the website PSE page, and the following summarizes the setup process.  NOTE: all UNIX accounts are controlled by OIT.  If you encounter problems with your UNIX account, contact the OIT Helpdesk.

1. If you do not have an OIT UNIX account, then create one as follows:

            a) go to webmail.utk.edu --------> new account registration tool------>register

                        for unix account, or click on (http://accounts.utk.edu/cgi-bin/uact/uact2register.cgi?func=loginform&type=unix).

2. Use your OIT webmail user id and password to log in and complete the public_html setup.  The folder will appear usually within about 5 minutes.

3. The procedure for transferring files is explained at the ME452w website PSE page, or access this site using the user id and password given in the first paragraph.

             http://cfdlab.utk.edu/452w/Public/PDFs/SSH_Help_452w.pdf

4.  A graphical presentation of the transfer procedure can be viewed at the CFD Lab website.

             Go to http://cfdlab.utk.edu and touch “About the UT CFD Lab” in the left hotword column.

5. Download the Lab Report template zip file from the PSE page into your public_html folder, then unzip it to upload your semester’s Lab report file.

6.  All Matlab-based computer labs can be executed on your PC after downloading the FEmPSE toolbox from the website PSE page.  The CFD Lab computer complex server is “par.engr.utk.edu” which controls course access for execution of the COMSOL-based computer experiments.  Your individual login and password for “par” will be assigned prior to assignment of the first COMSOL lab
