JOB SUMMARY:

IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 123,000
libraries and 17,500 museums.

The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that
connect people to information and ideas.  The Institute works at the
national level and in coordination with state and local organizations,
and with libraries and museums throughout the United States to sustain
heritage, culture, and knowledge; enhance learning and innovation; and
support professional development.

MAJOR DUTIES:





This is the position of Grant Program Specialist in the Discretionary
Programs Division, Office of Library Services (OLS).  The incumbent
participates in the grant review and award process and in the
administration of a program that awards competitive grants on an annual
basis.  Duties include promoting agency programs, advising potential
grant applicants, recruiting peer reviewers and consultants, managing
the application review and award process, training and monitoring the
work of support staff and/or contractors, convening panel meetings,
monitoring funded projects, publicizing successful projects and
practices, and preparing written reports and analyses.  The incumbent
will serve as a program officer in the Laura Bush 21st Century
Librarians program, which provides grants for the education and training
of librarians, preparation of faculty who will teach in graduate schools
of library and information science, pre-professional recruitment,
research, continuing education of librarians and library staff, and
related programs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

For GS-13:  Candidates for this position must have one year of
specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-12 level.
Specialized experience is that which would have provided the candidate
with knowledge of the library community in the United States and the
grant programs that provide funding to libraries.

--Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of the library
field.

 

 

VETERANS PREFERENCE: Five points may be added to the eligible ratings of
veterans who: Entered the military service prior to October 14, 1976;
served on active duty during the Gulf War between August 2, 1990 and
January 2, 1992, regardless of where the person served; or, served in a
military action for which they received a campaign badge or
expeditionary medal. Medal holders and Gulf War veterans must have
served continuously for at least 24 months or the full period for which
called or ordered to active duty. Ten points may be granted to the
eligible ratings of disabled veterans; Purple Heart recipients; spouses
or mothers of a 100 percent disabled veteran; or the widows, widowers,
or mothers of a deceased veteran.
