Discover Life in America oversees numerous All Taxa Biodiversity Inventories all over the U.S. with the flagship program occurring in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  I am a member of the DLIA Education Committee and have worked with the organization in various capacities for about 6-7 years now.  It is a very cool organization led by some really special people doing amazing research.  I strongly suggest that you look into their summer internship opportunities.

Student Summer Internships

In a call to all students, DLIA seeks its student interns for the summer of 2010! The internship with DLIA is a highly personal program, with none of the 'intern mill' characteristics of other student internships. As a summer intern you will be an integral part of a small staff, seeing and participating in the inner-workings of a conservation nonprofit. Though titled a 'photography internship', the diversity of responsibilities is extensive and there is much flexibility in duties according to skill set, as DLIA is eager to match student talents with the needs of the organization .
