Faculty News and Announcements

Dr. Charles Qing Cao, assistant professor in the Department of
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has just received a
National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award. The title of Dr. Cao’s
award is “CAREER: Operating System Based Energy Virtualization for
Sensor Networks.” Congratulations to Dr. Cao.

Dr. Christopher Cherry, an assistant professor in the Department of
Civil and Environmental Engineering, and environmental economics Ph.D.
student Luke Jones have just finished a report researching the use of
electric vehicles in India and Vietnam.

While the use of electric two-wheelers has increased in the People's
Republic of China (PRC) in the past decade, such unparalleled growth
has not extended beyond the PRC's borders to countries such as India
and Viet Nam, where environmentally detrimental gasoline motorcycles
dominate. The report documents market conditions in Ahmedabad, India,
and Ha Noi, Viet Nam, to explain why this is so, and analyzes the
potential environmental impact of electric two-wheelers to show how
they could chart a path toward sustainable transport in these and
other countries in the region.

Dr. Cherry and Luke’s report may be found here:
http://www.adb.org/Documents/Books/electric-bikes-ind-vie/default.asp

The report follows a somewhat similar study in China, released last
year. http://www.adb.org/Documents/Books/Electric-Bikes/default.asp

Dr. Cherry and Luke are currently working on a journal article focused
on this same topic.

E-Wen Huang, Ph.D. student, and Dr. Peter K. Liaw, Professor and Ivan
Recheff Chair of Excellence, in the Department of Materials Science
and Engineering, recently published an article titled “Cyclic-loading-
induced Accumulation of Geometrically Necessary Dislocations Near
Grain Boundaries in an Ni-based Superalloy” in the December issue of
JOM, the journal of The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). To
learn more about JOM, please visit the journal's home page, www.tms.org/jom.html
, and request a complimentary trial subscription to the journal in on-
line, page-turning format.

Several Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and
Department of Materials Science and Engineering faculty and students
participated in the “VULCAN at the Spallation Neutron Source:
Scientific Opportunities, Industrial Applications and Challenges”
workshop on Thursday, January 21. Details about the conference can be
found at "http://neutrons.ornl.gov/conf/Vulcan2010/agenda.shtml"

IREE 2010 ProgramThe 2010 International Research and Education in
Engineering (IREE) Program, sponsored by the National Science
Foundation and organized by Purdue University, is now accepting
applications for the 2010 grant cycle. IREE 2010 awardees will receive
a stipend (US$4,000 for graduate students and US$3,000 for
undergraduate students) to conduct engineering-related research in
China from May - August 2010. Additionally, grant awardees will
receive allowances for: an orientation program; travel to and housing/
meals in China; plus a re-entry program. The 50 students (20
undergraduate and 30 graduate students) that receive the IREE award
will spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier engineering research
projects in university, industry or government labs in China.

Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing as
degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate students at a U.S.
institution of higher education. They must also be able to express
both a demonstrated interest in a field of engineering related
research, and a desire to work in China. Finally, strong preference
will be given to United States citizens or nationals, or permanent
residents of the United States. In addition, women, underrepresented
groups and students from schools with limited research opportunities
are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application deadline for IREE 2010 is February 15th, 2010. For
eligibility and application, go to: "http://www.globalhub.org/iree".

Tennessee Apprentice Program The Office of Alumni Affairs is
coordinating an excellent career mentoring program for UT students.
The Tennessee Apprentice Program is in its second year and is
currently recruiting students for the 2010 program; student
applications are due Friday, January 29th.

An apprenticeship allows students to explore potential future careers
and connect with alumni who have been in their shoes and want to help
guide them in the right direction. Students may find that a
prospective field is just what they had always hoped it would be—or
they may find that a field of interest is much different than expected.

The "http://alumni.utk.edu/apprentice" website provides details as
well as a link to the application. Many students met with alumni last
year and offered very positive feedback on their experience.
