Faculty News and Announcements

Ivan Maldonado

In January of 2010, under sponsorship by the International Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Ivan Maldonado visited Harbin Engineering University (HEU) in Harbin, China as a nuclear engineering guest lecturer. Dr. Maldonado’s visit occurred during Harbin’s Annual Ice Festival, which is the largest and most impressive Ice Festival on the planet, thanks to their long winters and very low temperatures. He took several photos, which he posted on the following link: http://picasaweb.google.com His slide show is definitely worth seeing. Dr. Maldonado was the third lecturer from the UT Nuclear Engineering Dept. to present invited lectures at HEU. Dr. Lee Dodds visited in late October and Dr. Haitao Liao visited in December, which is also quite cold, but not nearly as cold as during Dr. Maldonado’s January visit.

Attention COE Seniors: Senior Gift 2010

Dr. Christopher CherrySenior Gift 2010 is especially important, as your gift will benefit your fellow engineers via the College Fund for Engineering. The College Fund for Engineering has recently served as a crucial resource for college-wide programming such as Engage, expanded advising services, and the Pre-Collegiate Scholars Program as well as for purchasing specialized equipment and facility renovations.

In addition, a Senior Gift in support of the College Fund for Engineering will allow the college to seize future opportunities and jump-start future initiatives. Please consider joining your classmates in support of Senior Gift 2010. Your Senior Gift will not only serve the immediate needs of engineering students, but it will set a wonderful example for other seniors, graduate students, underclassmen and future engineering students.

Please visit the Office of Engineering Development in 120 or 121 Perkins Hall in order to make a Senior Gift via check or credit card or contact them via email at [log in to unmask] for more information.

Office of Professional Practice Student Feature

JeniferJennifer Godbold is a mechanical engineering major who accepted a co-op assignment with ExxonMobil. She had her second rotation in summer 2009 and had the following to say about her experience:

“I worked this summer as a subsurface engineer. I was assigned to a gas field in south Texas. Every year the company is required by the Texas Railroad Commission to test the fluid level in gas and oil wells that are 25 years old. The Railroad Commission says the fluid must be at least 250 feet below the shallow freshwater zones under the ground. My job was to screen the data on the wells due for testing to identify ones that were likely to fail (i.e. their fluid level was above the allowed depth). When I found a well that was probably going to fail the test, I wrote procedures to repair it before it was tested.

I was able to take several trips to the field to see these repair jobs being performed. I also toured a drilling rig and saw a fracture job being performed. A fracture job is when fluid is pumped into the ground at a really high pressure to crack the formation rock so that oil and gas can flow more freely into the well.

I feel that I have learned a lot this summer about the oil and gas industry. ExxonMobil, in my opinion, has an excellent program. They really make an effort to teach you all they can while you're here as well as show you all parts of their company. I attended several events set up for us where they had heads of various parts of the company come and talk to us about what they do. They also try really hard to get you out to the field you're working in so you can see the operations. I also felt like my assignment was substantial and not just busy work. I had a great experience working for them this summer and would highly recommend them to other students.”

Jennifer is currently on her third rotation with ExxonMobil.

Student Opportunities

US Department of Transportation LogoNEXTRANS 2010 Summer Undergraduate Internship in Transportation. The NEXTRANS Center, USDOT Region V Regional University Transportation Center, is currently accepting applications for the 2010 Undergraduate Summer Internship in Transportation. This rigorous, 10-week program of study begins Monday, May 24, 2010 and ends Sunday, August 1, 2010.  (These dates may be adjusted for students on the quarter system). Six competitively-selected students will be awarded stipends of $4,000 each to participate in a NEXTRANS-funded project at their choice of location:  Purdue University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, or The Ohio State University.

Participants in this program will be exposed to the field of transportation through hands-on, collaborative research, under the guidance of NEXTRANS faculty members and graduate students.  By fostering a challenging environment in which students learn through discovery, the Center hopes to attract a new generation of leaders to transportation-related careers and graduate-level degrees.

Please inform your talented undergraduate engineering students of this exciting opportunity, and encourage them to apply by March 15, 2010.  For complete application information, please visit www.nextrans.org/internship.

NIMBioS Logo

NIMBioS Now Accepting Applications for Graduate Research Assistantships The National Institute of Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) invites current UTK/UTIA graduate students working at the interface between mathematics and biology to apply for graduate assistantships with the Institute.

Applications will be considered in the spring semester of each year for funding in the subsequent academic year, beginning August 1st. Students selected for the Assistantships will be awarded stipend support ($20,000/yr) and a tuition waiver to work on their proposed research topic in areas at the interface between mathematics and biology. NIMBioS will offer travel support to scientific meetings for Assistants to present their research.

In addition to carrying out their research as specified in their proposal, Assistants will be expected to assist with NIMBioS activities, including providing computational support (including assisting with model development, analysis and coding) for NIMBioS participants, assisting in Working Group and Workshop activities, and/or collaborating with postdocs and NIMBioS faculty and students. Applicants are strongly encouraged to review information on NIMBioS provided at http://www.nimbios.org/.

Any student who is mentored by a UT faculty member affiliated with NIMBioS is eligible to apply for an assistantship. Stipend support is for one year and may be renewed by re-application for a subsequent year. Applications will be accepted from students at any stage in their graduate education, although it is anticipated that students with at least two years of graduate study will be the best qualified to take advantage of this opportunity. Successful applicants will be expected to submit quarterly reports on their activities to the NIMBioS Associate Director for Graduate Activities.

The deadline for applications for NIMBioS Graduate Assistantships for Fall 2010 is Feb. 1, 2010. Award announcements will be made in March 2010.
