Library Associates Companies (LAC) LAC seeks candidates for the position of Project Archivist / Cataloger to work on site at an ongoing project in New Orleans, LA. Working with both restored and undamaged materials , the Project Archivist / Cataloger oversees the remaining Katrina recovery process for archives and will create MARC records in Voyager
and OCLC for all processed collections. In addition, the incumbent in this position will design an EAD implementation plan and will ensure that all existing and new MARC records conform to necessary standards for EAD cross-walking and implementation.

Primary Responsibilities
This is a list of primary responsibilities and is not intended to be all-inclusive:
* Analyze the level and quality of existing MARC records for archival materials.
* Review and assess finding aids and other access tools for all processed collections.
* Work in conjunction with the client to develop a workable cataloging timetable and priorities.
* Create original MARC records in OCLC and Voyager to full level for the description of archival materials ensuring the compliance of data with EAD data fields and crosswalks.
* Provide the client with EAD crosswalks and an implementation proposal.
* Potentially create more detailed finding aids for processed archival in collections with minimal finding aids.
* Oversee the archival processing tasks associated both with the Katrina Recovery Project and with the cataloging of collections.
* Keep the Project Manager informed of all issues relating to the archives piece of the project.
* Participate in the management and oversight of elements of the Katrina Recovery Project.
* Supervise Archival Cataloging Technician and other archival project staff.

Minimum Qualifications
* Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
* Demonstrated knowledge of current trends, standards, and practices of archival services in academic libraries.
* Original and copy cataloging of archival materials mandatory.
* Experience working with MARC bibliographic and holdings records mandatory
* Strong knowledge of Encoded Archival Descriptions (EAD) mandatory.
* Experience with physical processing of archives or access provision mandatory.
* Experience working in Integrated Library Systems, with a strong preference for Voyager.
* Understanding of Document Type Definitions (DTD).
* Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven production environment with changing priorities.
* Supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications
* Experience creating EAD cross-walks strongly preferred.
* Supervisory experience preferred.
* Knowledge of ISO/NISO, metadata, and W3C standards.
* Two years professional experience in archives at an institution of
higher education.

DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The University of Kentucky seeks an archivist within the Special Collections and Digital Programs Division (SCDP) reporting to the Director of Archives. The Access Archivist is responsible for:


* collection management and online access to Archives collections

* accessioning new materials utilizing Archivist’s Toolkit

* developing and refining access guidelines and ensuring that archival processing meets nationally accepted standards

* processing and supervising arrangement and description following best practices including Documenting Archives: A Content Standard.
* collaborating with Collections and Technical Services on the creation of collection-level MARC records

* editing finding aids and coordinating with Digital Programs to upload digital content

* forming appraisal and accessioning functions for new archival acquisitions including: assessment of research value, conservation evaluation, retention decisions, and creation of collection records

* reviewing State Model Records Retention Schedule to identify records of historical significance and working with the University Records Manager for permanent transfers to the Archives

* establishing processing priorities and appropriate level of processing for newly acquired and backlogged materials

* developing and maintaining the unit’s processing manual and guidelines for finding aid structure

* supervising a FTE processing assistant and coordinating work of student assistants

* providing basic reference service and advising users and inquirers on conducting research in the Archives’ collections

* working with SCDP faculty and staff to develop digital presence, including the Archive’s web site and web presentation of Archives’ materials
* developing Archives’ priorities, policies, procedures, and goals, especially as they relate to processing and arrangement of collections.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program. Effective written and oral communication skills. Demonstrable computer and information technology skills. Ability to interact positively and productively in a collegial academic environment with library colleagues and library users. Familiarity with EAD, Documenting Archives: A Content Standard, and experience processing collections. Commitment to ongoing professional development and activity and evidence of the ability to meet University of Kentucky requirements for promotion and tenure.

DESIRED: Minimum three years archival experience. Familiarity with Archivists’ Toolkit. Experience working with special collections materials.

Grateful Dead Archivist 

The University Library of the University of California, Santa Cruz, seeks an enterprising, creative, and service-oriented archivist to join the staff of Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) as Archivist for the Grateful Dead Archive. This is a potential career status position. The Archivist will be part of a dynamic, collegial, and highly motivated department dedicated to building, preserving, promoting, and providing maximum access both physically and virtually to one of the Library's most exciting and unique collections, The Grateful Dead Archive (GDA). The UCSC University Library utilizes innovative approaches to allow the discovery, use, management, and sharing of information in support of research, teaching, and learning.

Under the general direction of the Head of Special Collections and Archives, the GDA Archivist will provide managerial and curatorial oversight of the Grateful Dead Archive, plan for and oversee the physical and digital processing of Archives related material, and promote the GDA to the public and facilitate its use by scholars, fans, and students. 

MINIMUM Qualifications: 

• Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent accredited graduate archives management program.

• Significant, demonstrated experience working with books, manuscripts, photographs, recordings, or other material in a special collections & archives environment.

• Knowledge of the access tools for special collections and archival material and the standards and procedures for their preservation and conservation.

• Demonstrated experience developing processing plans and creating finding aids in accordance with national standards.

• Knowledge of and ability to maintain awareness of developments in archival processing, digital information technologies, and their uses in special collections and archives.

• Expert knowledge in the history and scholarship of contemporary popular music, or American vernacular culture, preferably the history and influence of the Grateful Dead.

• Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills. 

• Demonstrated oral, written and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to promote and present the archive to multiple audiences.

• Prior experience directing the work of others.


Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience working in public services in an academic environment.

• Demonstrated experience working on outreach and other donor related activities.

General Information:
Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees. They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and a generous benefit program including an excellent retirement system.
