Your Attitude Says It All
Ever hear the advice to smile when you're talking on the phone because it changes your tone? Well, the same is true about the job search process. Whether writing a cover letter or networking at an event or interviewing in person, attitude tells people more about you than a perfect pitch or resume any day.
Planning for Success: Your Guide to Creating and Implementing a Library Succession Plan
By: Beth Maser
Director of Professional Services at LibGig's parent company Library Associates Companies (LAC)
Presenters: Madeline Kriescher, coordinator, moderator, and speaker, U.S. Courts 10th Circuit Library; Blane K. Dessy, U.S. Department of Justice-Antitrust Branch Library; and Jean M. Holcomb, retired director, King County Law Library.
- Strategic planning is a strategic plan with a targeted goal, not a unique process.
- The goal of a strategic plan is to provide an organization with the staff required to meet current and future operating needs.
- A succession plan educates upper management about skill sets needed to staff a law library and lays the groundwork for management support for staffing initiatives.
For those who are lucky enough to still be employed, the fear of being laid-off continues to loom. If what we are hearing is true, the economic crisis will be with us for some time and this means that more lay-offs, cutbacks, etc. are ahead. So although we are unable to stop an employer from letting us go, we can prepare and give thought to "what if?"
When you're out of work, the temptation to "explain" is strong. A well-crafted cover letter says a lot about you but you may be giving away information that could hurt your chances of getting an interview. We all want to put our best foot forward.
How to Get Out of a Job Pickle
As of late, jobs are hard to come by; but what if you're one of the lucky job seekers who is both offered a job and has an upcoming interview for another enticing opportunity? This is a dream come true and also a nightmare! You want to make sure you're making the best decision but you don't want to risk losing the opportunity that's already been offered to you.
