OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc. is a nonprofit, membership, computer library service and research organization dedicated to the public purposes of furthering access to the world's information and reducing information costs.  Tens of thousands of libraries around the world use OCLC services to locate, acquire, catalog, lend and preserve library materials.

The OCLC Inclusion Initiative announces a new opportunity designed to provide a unique experience for an aspiring archivist from a historically under-represented group.

The Corporate Library Practicum will offer an opportunity to be part of the world's l eading library cooperative. The 6-8 week program will offer the selected student an opportunity to learn practical skills in archiving and cataloging through engaging work experiences.  The student will also contribute to innovative processes that deliver services to 70,000 libraries in 112 Countries and territories.

OCLC will begin accepting applications on September 21, 2009.  The deadline for applications is October 26, 2009. The start date for the practicum is negotiable; however, the experience must occur between January and May 2010. The selected individual must represent a historically under-represented group (defined in a manner consistent with the U.S. Census Bureau).

The OCLC Corporate Library Practicum student will select, catalog, and process materials to be incorporated into the OCLC Archives and bibliography database.

Compensation:
In support of most academic standards for practical study experiences, this is not a paid practical experience.  However, if a non-local student is selected the program, the selected student will receive a travel and housing stipend to cover the cost of living in Dublin, OH for the 6- 8 weeks of the program.  The travel stipend includes the costs associated with traveling to and from OH and a local travel allowance. If your institution allows for a paid practical study, OCLC will consider an hourly rate in lieu of housing, travel, etc.
