Access Services Librarian

 

The University of New Mexico Libraries (UL) has an opening (Position #0803056) for an Access Services Librarian. This is a full-time, 12 month non-tenure track faculty position. The faculty rank will be Lecturer III. The desired start date is January 4, 2010. The annual salary is negotiable from a minimum of $40,000 and includes full benefits.

 

Position Description

The successful candidate will work in a team-oriented and highly electronic environment, provide support and leadership to Access Services projects and initiatives including but not limited to collection management and inventory, collection development, and coordinating a combined reference and circulation service point that primarily serves undergraduates. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of print and electronic information sources, strong interpersonal skills, and outstanding analytic and problem solving skills for initiating plans and carrying out projects. This position reports to the Director of Access Services. The successful candidate will participate in faculty governance as detailed in the UNM Faculty Handbook.

 

Education and Experience

Minimum Requirements:

 

§ Master’s degree earned by the start date from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program.

 

§ 2 years reference desk experience, library information desk experience, or circulation desk experience in an academic or public library.

 

Preferred (Desired) Qualifications:

 

§ One year classroom library instruction or other teaching experience.

 

§ One year desk experience in a combined service setting.

 

§ One year desk experience providing reference in an academic or public library.

 

§ Experience leading and completing projects.

 

§ Experience with developing and implementing training programs.

 

§ Coursework or experience working with government documents.

 

§ Demonstrated motivation to learn new technologies.

 

§ Bilingual (Spanish-English) speaking skills.

 

§ Experience working with culturally diverse populations.

 

§ Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.

 

§ Demonstrated strong commitment to excellent customer service.

 

Primary Duties

 

§ Provide public services at a combined service point (reference and circulation) on a schedule which includes evenings and weekends.

 

§ Provide support and leadership for Access Services initiatives and projects.

 

§ Participate in library technology problem solving, implementation, and applications.

 

§ Participate in library orientation and bibliographic instruction as appropriate.

 

§ Provide effective and timely supervision of any assigned employees including training, career development, and performance management.

 

 

§ Participate in faculty governance meetings, as appropriate, and in library management meetings, as required.

 

Environment

The UL Facilities and Access Services Unit is responsible for maintaining safe, secure, inviting facilities for the UL which includes four libraries on the main UNM campus in Albuquerque. Access Services includes circulation and general reference services, a 24/5 facility, InterLibrary Loan and express document delivery, electronic reserves, LIBROS online catalog support and physical collection maintenance. The University of New Mexico Libraries is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, the Greater Western Library Alliance, and the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries and leads the LIBROS Consortium that hosts the shared catalog for fourteen academic libraries in New Mexico. The UL contains over 2 million volumes and includes four branch libraries: Centennial Science and Engineering Library; Fine Arts & Design Library; Parish Memorial Library (management and social sciences); and Zimmerman Library (education and humanities). Planning is currently underway in Zimmerman Library for the implementation of a Learning Commons with a Combined Service Point as the centerpiece. Zimmerman Library also houses the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. The UL is a regional library in the Federal Depository Library Program.
