TITLE:                    Clinical Librarian, Health Sciences Libraries

 

LOCATION:         University of Washington Health Sciences
Libraries/Harborview Medical Center

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL) seeks an
innovative, user-oriented and technically proficient individual to lead
clinical information services with particular responsibilities at Harborview
Medical Center (HMC).  HMC, a 400 bed facility and the public hospital of
King County, Washington, is managed by the University of Washington and is
the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center
serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.  The HSL serves over 20,000
individuals, including students, faculty, researchers, clinicians and staff
at top-ranked Schools of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy,
Dentistry and Social Work; a top-rated public university biosciences
research program; and two academic medical centers and a neighborhood clinic
network.  The School of Medicine is home to a unique, nationally recognized
regional medical education program, serving 5 states and supporting training
sites throughout Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI).  

 

The HSL is composed of the Health Sciences Library and Information Center in
the Health Sciences Building, the School of Social Work Library, and the
K.K. Sherwood Library at Harborview Medical Center, and is also a part of
the University Libraries.  The HSL is known nationally and internationally
for its innovative information management programs. The HSL serves as the
headquarters for the Pacific Northwest Region, National Network of Libraries

The Clinical Librarian serves as a member of HSL's information management
team with primary responsibilities as Liaison to the Harborview Medical
Center to provide essential information service, education, evaluation and
support to the health care providers and researchers at HMC.  The position
reports to the Associate Director, Health Sciences Libraries.

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

* Serves as a liaison for faculty, staff, and students at HMC and in the
Departments of Surgery, Laboratory Medicine, Neurological Surgery,
Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, Pathology, and
Radiology.  

* Responsibilities include consultation, referral, current awareness,
information literacy, teaching and collection development in subject areas
relevant to these departments to facilitate effective use of information,
and includes a focus on physician decision-making.

* Designs and teaches classes for faculty, staff, residents, students and
administrators in the use of information resources. Creates information
tools in the most effective formats to assist users. 

* Identifies and evaluates appropriate tools for education and communication
using the appropriate technology as needed for a diverse clinical, academic
and research staff.  

* Attends Grand Rounds, journal clubs, and other relevant academic and
clinical meetings.

* Conducts environmental scans regarding current developments in
translational research and translational medicine at UW Medicine and creates
educational sessions as needed.

* Contributes to HSL's education program development. 

* Participates in digital library initiatives.  

* Provides in-person, electronic and telephone consultations as part of the
Reference Consultant team.  Participates in evening and weekend information
service as needed.

* Participates in the planning of the HSL's presence at HMC as it moves to a
more central location.

* Represents HSL at Libraries, University, HMC and off-campus meetings.
Fosters understanding and support of Library initiatives and programs, and
promotes communication between HSL and other Libraries' units.

* Serves as a member of the Harborview Medical Center EthnoMed team.

* Provides technical support as an informatics consultant using the HSL
Plone content management system.

* Performs professional responsibilities in teaching, scholarship and
service.  

* Good communication skills are a requirement for this position and for all
Libraries' staff members. 

* Demonstrates evidence of continuing professional growth.

* Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs other duties as
required.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

 

* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library
Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies
degree.

* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the
contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.

* Three years post-MLS experience in a life or health sciences library.  

* Successful experience in applying technologies to deliver information
services to health professionals, students and administrators.  

* Excellent search skills.  

* Proven experience and enthusiasm for teaching.  

* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented
environment.  

* Demonstrated strong oral and written communications skills including the
ability to communicate effectively with clinicians and other hospital staff;
ability to work collegially and collaboratively with others within and
beyond the Library; and the interpersonal skills to work effectively with
culturally diverse library users and colleagues.  

* A high working level of technology proficiency, including working
proficiency with Windows and Macintosh operating systems.

 

Preferred:

 

* Experience with content management systems such as Plone or MS SharePoint.


* Experience in design of health information classes including design using
development tools such as Moodle.

* Experience with a variety of citation management programs.

* Demonstrated understanding of the role of technologies to promote
productivity of library users.

* Flexible self-starter with commitment to life-long learning.

* Understanding of changes in the delivery, management, and use of health
information in academic health sciences environments.

 

 

SALARY:               

$45,000 minimum.  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and
background.

 

 

BENEFITS:            

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of
Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity
Investments) on a matching basis.  Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24
working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year.
No state or local income tax.
