General Purpose
Under the direction of the Director and Associate Director of Oral History of American Music (OHAM), the Research Archivist shares responsibility for =
the day-to-day operation of OHAM and the supervision of its staff, with
particular focus on providing public services and access to the collections.
Oral History of American Music (OHAM), recently incorporated into the Yale
University Library, is the preeminent ongoing oral history project in the
field of American music. In operation for almost forty years, the archive is
recognized for collecting and preserving recorded memoirs in the voices of
those who make our music history. Major composers of the 20th century are
represented, among them Aaron Copland, Virgil Thomson, Roger Sessions,
Elliott Carter, William Schuman, Ned Rorem, John Cage, George Perle, and Lou
Harrison. Interviews with many younger composers are included and are updated
periodically. OHAM makes its holdings widely available to the scholarly co=
mmunity by providing onsite research, reference services, publications, and=
public programming. The result is that numerous books, articles, and telev=
ision and radio documentaries have been derived from materials in the OHAM =
collections.=20

Responsibilities
Provides high-level reference assistance to the OHAM collection, both to re=
searchers in person, and through e-mail, telephone, and regular mail.=A0 Im=
plements priority projects for OHAM, including the creation of original ite=
m-level and collection-level cataloging of OHAM's collections of recorded i=
nterviews, the transcription of OHAM interviews and editing new transcripti=
ons, and archival processing of new materials into the OHAM collections, wi=
th the writing of new finding aids as appropriate.=A0 Serves as a full part=
icipant in OHAM's planning activities, including innovation in areas of acc=
ess, digital collections, and reference/public services. May also take part=
in planning exhibits and public programs, and may help with collection dev=
elopment.=A0 Works collaboratively with staff in the Music Library, the His=
torical Sound Recordings Collection, and other special collections reposito=
ries in the Yale University Library.=A0 Expected to be active professionall=
y both within and outside the Yale University Library community. May be req=

Qualifications
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information =
science and/or Master's degree in music. Appointment to the rank of Librari=
an II requires two years of relevant professional experience and demonstrat=
ed professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Demonstrated evide=
nce of planning ability, leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to dev=
elop proposals for improving OHAM's services and procedures. Demonstrated a=
bility to work effectively and collaboratively with researchers, faculty, s=
taff, and students in a complex and changing environment. Excellent interpe=
rsonal and communication skills. Strong service orientation. Demonstrated s=
upervisory skills. Preferred: Familiarity with standard archival procedures=

The Position=20
Manuscripts and Archives seeks an early career professional with processing=
experience and a grounding in twentieth-century American history to proces=
s the papers of the John Hay Whitney family and two related collections. Re=
porting to the Head of Arrangement and Description, the John Hay Whitney Fa=
mily Papers Processing Archivist will assist with the development of approp=
riate processing plans for the various collection components, and will have=
primary responsibility for processing the three collections. In addition, =
the incumbent in this position will hire and supervise student assistants f=
or processing, implement standard preservation measures when necessary, dev=
elop and carry out selected digitization and planning for future digitizati=
on efforts, hire and supervise the work of a graduate intern to assist with=
digitization and outreach, and work with the Head of Public Services to pr=
omote use of the collection by Yale faculty and students.

Responsibilities
Participates with other professional staff in the development of appropriat=
e processing plans for various components of the papers. Arranges archival=
material in all formats in the John Hay Whitney Family Papers and two rela=
ted collections (approximately 300 linear feet) in accordance with approved=
plans, timetables, and departmental procedures, including screening for se=
nsitive material and implementation of necessary preservation procedures. =
Prepares finding aids and catalog records for the collections in accordance=
with departmental guidelines and archival and library standards, using XML=
-based encoding tools for the finding aids. Works with appropriate departm=
ental and library staff to plan and implement the digitization of selected =
materials from the Whitney Family Papers, according to departmental and lib=
rary procedures and standards. Coordinates development of a longer-term di=
gitization plan and identification of potential funding sources for future =
use by the Yale University Library. Engages actively with professional org=
anizations and literature; keeps abreast of archival trends and development=
s. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. May be require=
d to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.

Qualifications
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information =
science and/or master's degree in history or related discipline. Formal ar=
chival training or education and/or demonstrated knowledge of archival theo=
ry and practice. Graduate-level coursework in twentieth-century American h=
istory. Demonstrated archival processing experience. Familiarity with bas=
ic preservation and conservation standards for archival and manuscript coll=
ections. Familiarity with DACS, EAD, MARC, LCSH, AACR2, and other data con=
tent and structure standards relevant to the archival control of collection=
materials. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally=
and in writing. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work =
independently and collaboratively in a team environment. Ability to lift a=
rchival boxes (up to 50 lbs.) and push heavy trucks on a frequent basis. P=
referred: Experience processing large collections of personal or family pa=
pers. Experience directing the efforts of student workers or interns. Fam=
iliarity with working in an editing environment constrained by XML schemas,=
using XML editors such as XMetaL or oXygen.
