Goals and Projects
This fellowship provides the opportunity to become a key player on both the Eskind Biomedical Library and the Knowledge Management teams.  Knowledge Management uses high-level data and knowledge organization skills to optimize VUMC’s clinical, research and educational initiatives by collaborating with clinicians and researchers to embed best practices in the organizing, structuring and reuse of the institution’s knowledge.  Reporting to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Knowledge Management and Director of the Eskind Biomedical Library, the fellow will help the teams conceive and develop innovative, value-added projects and services, identify potential grant funding sources, perform background research, contribute as needed to the conceptualization and writing of grant applications, and assist with the implementation of knowledge management research projects.   In addition, he or she will have primary responsibility for writing other documents as needed.

The fellow will also be given the opportunity to learn or experience other facets of the library including providing filtered and evidence-based information services to VUMC clinicians; participating in projects to integrate filtered information provision into informatics tools; enhancing knowledge management tools; participating in and developing user training, e.g. students and faculty; and using their skills to assist fellow library staff and users.

Desired Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in library/information science and/or a graduate degree in a field related to healthcare or knowledge management and a demonstrated
interested in library/information science.  The Fellowship requires excellent proven oral and written communication skills, including prior grant-writing experience; strong organizational, interpersonal, and facilitation skills; and the ability to learn and apply new skills rapidly.  The candidate should exhibit the ability to see the “big picture” and to think innovatively.  Additionally, the candidate should show strong, analytical, leadership and critical thinking skills; a high level of self-direction and motivation; demonstrated attention to detail; an interest in lifelong learning; and a desire to contribute to the profession through research projects and scholarly communication.  Fellows should have excellent computer skills and be proficient with technology use and integration; be able to prioritize and work both independently and as part of a team; possess a vision for the future of information and knowledge management services; and be excited about working in a fast paced, highly demanding and dynamic environment.

Training Approach
Library fellows are expected to complete Eskind Biomedical Library’s unique training program in health science librarianship which is a mixture of life-long learning and project-based management.  Library fellows are typically involved in various program areas or projects in order to develop or enhance skills such as library research, synthesis and analysis, leadership, setting priorities, planning, time management and allocating resources.  Opportunities are available to attend biomedical informatics seminars and grand rounds and for advanced training in health/biomedical science librarianship and biomedical informatics.  Fellows are expected to demonstrate knowledge gained through the training program in skills verification sessions.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week).  Given appropriate demonstration of skills/knowledge and successful completion of the two-years fellowship, the candidate may be eligible for an exempt position at EBL.  In addition, the promotion path includes the potential for a faculty appointment in the Department of Biomedical Informatics.
