The Miami University
Libraries seek a collaborative, self-motivated, service-minded professional for
the position of Catalog Librarian, reporting to the Head of Technical Services.
The Catalog Librarian is responsible for cataloging non-book materials,
primarily for the Instructional Materials Center, and other monographic materials
as necessary. The Catalog Librarian supervises the copy cataloging operations
of the department and works closely with colleagues in Technical Services to
maintain the department’s cost-effectiveness and quality of work while
employing innovative technologies and practices.
Duties
·
Performs original
and complex copy cataloging for all monographic formats and languages; emphasis
on non-book materials, including all media formats
·
Ensures quality
of bibliographic records through compliance with national and local standards
such as MARC, AACR2r, LCSH, LCCS, OCLC, LC cataloging practices, and other
appropriate cataloging and metadata standards, and communicates changes in
standards, policies and practices to department staff
·
Provides training
and supervision for copy cataloging support staff
·
Assists in
cataloging of special collection materials and continuing resources as needed
·
Coordinates and
participates as needed in special cataloging projects
·
Works closely and
productively with colleagues in and outside the department
Requirements
·
Master’s degree
in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution
·
Ability and
initiative to meet the continuing contract and promotion requirements of the Libraries Appointment, Rank

Training and/or
experience in technical services processes
·
Knowledge of AACR2r,
LCRI, LCCS, LCSH, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic, holdings, and authority
data
·
Knowledge and/or
experience with common bibliographic and metadata tools, such as OCLC Connexion
and integrated library systems
·
Knowledge of and
interest in current issues, trends, and emerging standards in cataloging, such
as FRBR and RDA
·
Knowledge of
trends in information technology
·
Strong
oral and written communication skills
Preferred
·
Experience in an
academic library
·
Experience using the
Innovative Interfaces Millennium integrated library system
·
Reading knowledge
of at least one foreign language
·
Experience in a
consortial environment such as OhioLINK
·
Knowledge of
non-MARC cataloging and metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, METS,
etc.)
·
A positive
outlook and a sense of humor
This is a full-time, permanent, 12-month appointment at the
rank of Assistant or Associate Librarian, depending on qualifications.
Appointment as Associate Librarian requires documented record based upon very
strong performance in primary professional responsibilities, very strong
performance in either service or scholarship/creative activity, and strong
performance in either service or scholarship/creative activity. Salary starting
at $43,000 dependent on qualifications.
