TITLE: Education and Assessment Coordinator, National
Network of
Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Northwest
Region (NN/LM PNR)
Part-time position – appoint at 60%.
LOCATION: Health Sciences Libraries
THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest academic research libraries in North
America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than
seven million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than
50,000 serial titles, and several million items in other formats. Students and
faculty recognize the value provided by the Libraries and rank the Libraries as
the most important source of information for their work. The Libraries also receives
the highest satisfaction rating of any academic service on the surveys of
graduating seniors conducted by the Office of Educational Assessment
THE POSITION:
The University of Washington Health Sciences Libraries (HSL)
seeks an innovative librarian with expertise in distance education and
assessment to join the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific
Northwest Region (NN/LM PNR). The mission of the NN/LM PNR is to improve
delivery of health information in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and
Washington via a regional network of libraries, agencies, and organizations.
An underlying focus of this mission is contributing to the elimination of
health disparities by improving health information access for populations that
are underserved due to location, poverty, ethnicity, non-English speaking,
limited literacy, or adverse health status.
The purpose of this position is to develop and deliver
needed educational resources, via various modalities, and to conduct program
assessment activities of the NN/LM PNR. Duties will also include working with
the staff of seven other regional offices in the NN/LM and staff in the
National Network Office (NNO) headquartered at the National Library of
Medicine. NN/LM PNR is funded by a contract from the National Library of
Medicine.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Under the general direction of the Associate Director:
1. Assess user groups for educational needs and work with
appropriate staff to develop a plan and strategy to fulfill those needs.
2. Create and maintain web-deliverable interactive,
self-paced lessons, tutorials, and learning objects that extend NN/LM
educational activities to network members and priority outreach audiences via
distance learning modalities.
3. Advise PNR staff on distance education and assessment
modalities (i.e. software and systems).
4. Coordinate, schedule, and host distance learning
continuing education webconference meetings and presentations for NN/LM PNR
network members and priority outreach audiences.
5. Participate in conducting formal surveys, focus groups,
and/or interviews related to NN/LM PNR program assessment and development.
6. Assist in evaluating the NN/LM PNR program, and in
conducting data collection and analysis, for selected process and outcomes
related to regional network services and outreach programs.
7. Conduct workshops and presentations on skills and methods
for conducting needs assessments, outreach evaluation and/or evaluation of
library services impact.
8. Maintain assigned NN/LM web pages.
9. Maintain working knowledge of e-tools and emerging
technologies (e.g. blogs, wikis, media-casting, RSS, and other digital
capabilities) to appropriately distribute NN/LM PNR information and education.
10. Contribute, as needed, to staffing exhibits of relevant
electronic resources, particularly NLM products and services.
11. Serve as a liaison to the NNO about distance
education-related issues affecting information delivery and library service of
Network organizations.
12. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned; performs
other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of
the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
* One year post-M.L.S. experience in an academic or health
sciences library environment or the equivalent.
* Strong teaching skills and demonstrated experience
creating effective instructional and informational materials.
* Demonstrated experience in using assessment to plan,
develop, and evaluate programmatic activities and services.
* Demonstrated proficiency to create and maintain web-deliverable
interactive, self-paced lessons, tutorials, and modules that extend effective
library education.
* Demonstrated proficiency with webconference software,
Moodle, and other relevant learning and information technologies, such as (but
not limited to) Camtasia Studio, Flash, and Java authoring tools.
* Experience with a variety of Web applications, such as
(but not limited to) Dreamweaver (site-editing package) and WordPress (blog
software).
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated
ability to explain technology in plain English.
* Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and
collegial team environment.
* Excellent organizational, time, and project management
skills.
* Valid driver’s license and travel required.
Preferred:
* Coursework in medical librarianship; demonstrated
experience with NLM and NN/LM products and services
* Experience working in and leading team-based initiatives,
preferably with both library and non-library staff.
* Demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment
characterized by ambiguity, change, and occasionally competing agendas.
* Willingness to be flexible in moving from part-time to
full-time status should conditions warrant.
SALARY:
$26,400/year minimum at 60%. Starting salary commensurate
with qualifications and background.
Part-time status (60%); flexibility needed for potential
increase to fulltime.
Position is funded under contract with the National Library
of Medicine. The current contract extends through April 30, 2011.
BENEFITS:
Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the
University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The Vanguard Group, and/or
Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of
24 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year
(both prorated for part-time appointment). No state or local income tax.
