Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking a
Manuscript Archivist. This is a full-time, 12-month, continuing appointment at
the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor available January 1, 2009, or
later.
Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the Director, Special Collections Research
Center, the Manuscript
Archivist is responsible for accessioning, arranging, describing, and providing
access to manuscript collections. Specifically, the Manuscript Archivist will
be responsible for appraising and accessioning materials in multiple formats;
arranging and describing collections for research use; preparing finding aids
and other descriptive tools including EAD; working with the preservation
librarian to house and preserve materials; providing general reference
assistance as well as manuscript-specific consultations; promoting the
manuscript collection for instruction and research; evaluating and revising
departmental policies and procedures as necessary; developing grant proposals;
training, supervising, and evaluating civil service staff, graduate assistants,
and/or student assistants; scholarly research and/or creative activity and
external and internal service activity; and special projects and duties as
assigned.
Required
Qualifications: ALA
accredited Master’s of Library Science or a graduate degree in history or
other relevant discipline with graduate level archival coursework. Minimum of
one (1) year of relevant archival experience in an academic library or
archives. Broad knowledge of current technological applications to archival
management and descriptive standards (e.g., EAD, digitization), and willingness
and capacity to be directly involved in developing and applying these
techniques. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both
oral and written) including ability to work effectively and cooperatively with
staff, colleagues, and researchers. Reference experience and knowledge of
issues related to archives and manuscript collections. Supervisory experience.
For appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: interest and potential
to meet established Library Affairs criteria for promotion and tenure,
including professional service and published research. For appointment at the
Associate Professor rank: in addition to the above qualifications, a
minimum of six (6) years of relevant archival experience in an academic library
or archives. A sustained record of peer-reviewed research and publications,
including a record of professional service at state, regional, or national
levels.
Preferred Qualifications: Academy of Certified
Archivists certification or eligibility to pursue
certification. Graduate work in American philosophy or literature.

Salary is competitive (Assistant Professor $43,000 minimum; Associate Professor
