Library Intern is being sought by Population Action International (PAI), 
an independent policy group working to improve individual well-being and 
preserve global resources by mobilizing political and financial support 
for population, family planning and reproductive health policies and 
programs.  PAI strives to create a world in which humanity and the natural 
environment exist in balance, fewer people live in poverty, and every 
person has a right and access to sexual and reproductive health.  

The Library Intern will work closely with the PAI library staff and, based 
on interests and skills, will participate in work on special projects as 
well as standard library technical and reference services. Current special 
project include assisting with specific refinements to two recently 
launched web-based library products:  a photo archive built with Portfolio 
and an online library system based on InMagic’s new Genie technology.  
Upcoming special projects include the development of a wiki-based history 
of the organization and the design of a library site on SharePoint, a 
collaboration technology being implemented throughout the organization.
Specific duties may include:
Analyze field entries in the upgraded library catalog to establish 
consistencies in subject term use and edit records using InMagic’s Content 
Server client 
Assist with cataloging PDFs that can now be included in the library 
collection.
Assist in weeding a portion of the collection and editing corresponding 
records to reflect removals
Assist in reference services
Assist in evaluating library archival materials for scanning to an online 
repository and excerpting for use in a wiki-based history of the 
organization
Assist in developing effective methods to collect photo information from 
photographers
Meet individually with photographers to develop descriptions and tags for 
their trip photos and process results for submission to the photo archive
Assist in brainstorming and developing innovative services, such as 
personalized RSS alert capabilities, to build into a planned SharePoint 
library site

This position requires graduate school experience in a library / 
information sciences program; strong computer skills; detail-oriented; 
good interpersonal skills, basic cataloging skills desirable; and interest 
in working with databases, photography and digital image preservation, and 
information organization.
