Organizational Setting
The IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) Library is located in the
Department of Nuclear Energy. It provides professional information
management and services in all areas of IAEA activities, with the
following core functions: (1) managing information resources; (2)
providing information services; (3) promoting information exchange.
The Library is divided into two services: Technical Services covers all
areas of information processing; Reader Services focuses on providing
information services to Library clients.
The International Nuclear Information System (INIS) database is a major
repository of information about the peaceful uses of nuclear science and
technology.

Main purpose
Under the joint supervision of the team leaders of the Library Technical
Services and the INIS Content Management Group, the incumbent provides
subject analysis and quality control for the Library's online catalogue
and INIS database.

Role
The Librarian is: (1) an analyst, performing subject analysis according
to Library of Congress subject headings, the INIS thesaurus, Universal
Decimal Classification; (2) a reviewer, performing quality control to
ensure consistency, accuracy and accessibility of information sources in
the Library's online public access catalogue/INIS; (3) a working
supervisor for the Library's cataloguing assistant, providing guidance
in descriptive cataloguing.

Partnerships
The incumbent builds collaborative working relationships with
Library/INIS staff at all levels, working primarily with the immediate
supervisors.

Functions / Key Results Expected
To increase access to information resources from the Library/INIS
through:
*    Performing subject analysis by assigning appropriate descriptors
using the Library of Congress subject headings and the INIS thesaurus; 
*    Performing classification according to the Universal Decimal
Classification; 
*    Providing guidance for descriptive cataloguing; 
*    Performing quality control to ensure consistency, accuracy and
accessibility of information sources in the Library's online public
access catalogue/INIS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
*    Technical expertise: In-depth knowledge of international
cataloguing standards (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, International
Standard Bibliographic Description, MARC21, Library of Congress subject
headings, INIS thesaurus, Universal Decimal Classification) and
ability to interpret them relating to the description of electronic
media. 
*    Knowledge of automated information systems. 
*    Strong analytical skills to translate the content into clear
descriptions. 
*    Planning and organizing skills: Ability to establish priorities
and to plan, coordinate and monitor his/her own work. 
*    Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a
multicultural and multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect
for diversity. 
*    Supervisory skills. 
*    Accuracy and ability to pay attention to detail.

Education, Experience and Language Skills
*    University (or equivalent) degree, preferably in library or
information science. A university degree in nuclear science and
technology     would be an advantage. 
*    At least 2 years of experience in indexing and the use of
controlled vocabularies (thesaurus system). 
*    Experience in descriptive cataloguing using AACR2, ISBD, MARC21.

*    Fluency in oral and written English. 

Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free
annual net base salary starting at US $43 662 (subject to mandatory
deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable
post adjustment which currently amounts to US $33 751*, dependency
benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation
expenses; six weeks' annual leave, home leave, pension plan and health
insurance.
