TITLE: Media Cataloging/Metadata Librarian
LOCATION: Monographic Services Division
THE LIBRARIES:
Among the largest academic research libraries in North
America, the University of Washington Libraries has a collection of more than
six million cataloged volumes, an equal number in microform format, more than
50,000 serial titles, and a combined media collection of well over 27,000
items. Located on the Pacific Rim, the University has a great interest in
Asia. The Libraries have significant collections in South and Southeast
Asia, Near East, Slavic and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and East Asia. As
scholarship shifts from print to a broader range of formats for primary and
secondary sources, the Libraries' media collections for these areas of the
world are growing rapidly.
THE MONOGRAPHIC SERVICES DIVISION:
The Monographic Services Division is one of two technical
services units within the Resource Acquisitions and Description/Information
Technology Services department of the University of Washington Libraries. It
acquires and catalogs monographs and integrating resources for the Seattle,
Bothell and Tacoma campuses of the University. The Division handles a
growing volume of non-book materials, in particular film and sound recordings,
in a wide range of languages and scripts. It also creates digital
collections, provides subject analysis and authority work for them, and plays a
lead role in setting cataloging policy and in developing metadata standards and
applications within the Libraries.
THE POSITION:
As a member of the Special Materials Cataloging Section,
which functions as a self-managing unit of the Monographic Services Division,
classifies and provides subject analysis for monographs in a variety of
formats. Participates in the creation of metadata for digital collections
using a variety of metadata schema.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
* Performs descriptive and subject cataloging and
classification of monographs in non-book formats in all subject areas and
languages, in particular for DVDs and VHS, using current Anglo-American
Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress classification and subject headings and
OCLC/MARC tagging, in accordance with local policies.
* Coordinates and performs cataloging of International
Studies media materials. Contributes to the cataloging of media in
languages with which the incumbent is not familiar, using team cataloging as
necessary.
* Serves on the Metadata Implementation Group, helping
organize and implement digital projects as needed. Implementation may
involve the application of non-traditional metadata schema; the Libraries
currently employs Dublin Core, EAD, and MARCXML, with work developing on other
standards.
* Participates in all aspects of team management.
* When serving as a member of the division's Management
Team, participates in the development, communication, implementation and evaluation
of new policies and procedures. Cooperatively prepares reports, studies
and surveys as required. Works with other team members to plan new
initiatives, adjust staffing and workflow, and meet changing circumstances and
goals. Assists and substitutes for the other team members when necessary.
* When serving as Personnel Coordinator of the section,
conducts performance evaluations for one librarian and four library
specialists; evaluates temporary staff as circumstances require; acts upon
travel and leave requests.
* Serves as liaison between the Division and other library
units as assigned to resolve cataloging problems or questions.
* Accepts responsibility for communication with coworkers
and supervisors.
* Participates in library committees and meetings as
appropriate.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American
Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information
studies degree.
* Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of
the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
* Minimum of two years of experience cataloging using AACR2
and LCRI, MARC and LCSH.
* Experience cataloging media materials, specifically video
and sound recordings.
* Knowledge of metadata standards, in particular Dublin
Core.
* Ability to work in a self-managing section.
* Excellent oral and written communications skills.
Analytic and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work effectively with individuals and with
groups. Ability to function well in a changing environment, to work
effectively within a large organization, and to exercise initiative in a
collaborative framework.
* Commitment to professional development and service.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages from
among the Slavic languages, and/or Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai,
Indonesian, or Hindi.
* NACO, SACO or BIBCO experience.
* Work experience in a research library.
* Experience assigning metadata in Dublin Core or another
non-MARC schema.
SALARY: $45,000
minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.
BENEFITS: Librarians are academic personnel and
participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF, The
Vanguard Group, and/or Fidelity Investments) on a matching basis.
Vacation is accrued at the rate of 24 working days per year; sick leave at the
rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax.
